Newt Gingrich Pandering to Birthers, White House Suggests

Former GOP House speaker Newt Gingrich suggested in an interview with National Review over the weekend that President Obama operates out of a "Kenyan, anti-colonial" worldview, tying his argument to an article in Forbes by conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza.

Gingrich, who says he is pondering a run at the White House in 2012, also called Mr. Obama "a person who is fundamentally out of touch with how the world works, who happened to have played a wonderful con, as a result of which he is now president."

On ABC's "Good Morning America" today, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs responded by suggesting that Gingrich was ""trying to appeal to the fringe of people who don't think the president was born in this country."

"You would normally expect better from somebody who had held the position of Speaker of the House," he added.

Gibbs' comment echoed a criticism of Gingrich from a man with whom he usually has little in common: Conservative commentator Pat Buchanan, who in August cast Gingrich as a "political opportunist" who is using the so-called "Ground Zero mosque" issue to position himself for a run at the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.

Gingrich had previously compared the effort to construct an Islamic cultural center two blocks from the former site of the World Trade Center to Nazis putting up a sign next to Washington D.C.'s Holocaust Memorial Museum.

In a Tweet today, Gingrich wrote that he is "Thrilled that WH (@PressSec) decided to highlight Dinesh D'Souza's excellent article in @Forbes this AM on @GMA."

The D'Souza article claims, in part, the following:

"Our President is trapped in his father's time machine. Incredibly, the U.S. is being ruled according to the dreams of a Luo tribesman of the 1950s. This philandering, inebriated African socialist, who raged against the world for denying him the realization of his anticolonial ambitions, is now setting the nation's agenda through the reincarnation of his dreams in his son. The son makes it happen, but he candidly admits he is only living out his father's dream. The invisible father provides the inspiration, and the son dutifully gets the job done. America today is governed by a ghost."

As ABC News' Jake Tapper notes in his piece on Gibbs' comments this morning, "There are a number of assertions by D'Souza that are questionable, beginning with the premise that a father the president barely knew is his single greatest influence." (It's also far from clear that the president's father was socialist, as Tapper discusses.)

Gingrich has been aggressively attacking Mr. Obama this year, comparing him, in a July appearance, to a "teenager with a credit card."

Late last month, conservative Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn said Gingrich, who has acknowledged cheating on both his first and second wives, was "the last person I'd vote for for president of the United States" because "[h]is life indicates he does not have a commitment to the character traits necessary to be a great president."

In the American full contact sport of political rhetoric this is a Bush league razzle dazzle play for no yardage. Newt, who passionately promoted family values while divorcing his cancer stricken wife to marry his young girlfriend (who he also later traded for a younger rookie), takes the kick off by accusing Obama of a "wonderful con". Next the G-man fakes right with a Statue of Liberty end run and claims the Big Kahuna has inherited his father's anti-colonial mind set while promising to take this country back to the virtues of our founding fathers who had their minds very much set on anti-colonialism and there's a flag on the play. I can't wait for basketball season to start.

This question is for all of you conservatives out there. You rant and rave about how this country is going downhill, how we have gotten away from the constitution. What does that really mean? What exactly would you like to see done away with? How is this country getting away from the what the Constitution intended? What dept of the Governmet would you like to see done away with? What would you like to see changed and why? And how you replace or compensate for the dept that you did away with? You claim to want to "Take this country back" well, take it back from whom? and take it back to where?

Newt Gingrich is such a joke. He's nothing more than a delusional, radical domestic terrorist...right up there with Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck...always fanning the flames of discontent, fear and hatred...pretending to be patriots and christians. For a former history professor, he seems woefully ignorant of American and world history....OR is he counting on the ignorance of his audience for political gain?? He will always play the cards of racism to a few conservatives who are susceptible to racist ideas and will do or say anything for the 2012 presidental nomination. President Obama greatly surpasses him in intellect and decency.

I am a wealthy person, I imagine you call that an "achiever"?

I support the current administration along with many more like me. You obviously have nothing of truth to offer... just stupid stereotypes and propaganda. Sad.

If Newt Gingrich runs for president, it is going to be a wonderful ride for so many people... comedians especially.

Democrats and center to left/center Independents will be thrilled, Republicans with presidential aspirations will be estatic -- the only thing that could possibly be better si if BOTH Gingrich and Palin choose to run...

Oh the drama. Oh the destruction... can you imagine the name calling in THAT race?
Please let it happen.... the country will be all the better to let these two destroy each other!

Are you for real?

If so, please get on your knees and ask Christ for some truth in your heart... you have none right now.

I tend to agree with Newt. the President's apology tours have been nothing but and example of his father disdain for western civilization.. Too bad the dolt libs at CBS are nothing more than the propaganda wing of this fascist ideologue globalist president, instead of being what Franklin suggested the news be, foils for the people to see what our elected leaders are truly doing!!

G-Grinch is trying to steal again, this time he's trying to steal an election by 'appearing' to back people that have been shown to be crazy (birthers). He is playing by G, Bushs rules and trying to steal this one like Bush stole the first one from Gore, (I didn't want either one)..
