White House Laments Quran Burning Plan

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs today echoed Gen. David Petraeus' concerns about plans by a Florida minister to host an "International Burn a Koran Day" to protest the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"Images of the burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan - and around the world - to inflame public opinion and incite violence," Petraeus said.

Gibbs pointed to that comment when asked for White House reaction to the plan from Gainesville, Florida-based Dove World Outreach Center to burn copies of the sacred Islamic text.

"As [Petraeus] said, it puts our troops in harm's way," Gibbs told reporters Tuesday. "And obviously [anything] that puts our troops in harm's way would be a concern to this administration."

Gibbs added, however, that the White House has not reached out to the church's pastor, and he said he had not heard of any plans to do so.

Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., and author of the book "Islam Is of the Devil," has declared his church will proceed with plans to burn copies of the Quran on September 11, despite being denied a burning permit by the city council.

The plan to burn Qurans has already generated protests in Afghanistan, where hundreds chanted "Long live Islam" and "Death to America" at a rally over the weekend. Thousands rallied in Jakarta, Indonesia and other cities two days earlier over the planned Quran burning.

The leader of the tiny evangelical church, Terry Jones, said he plans to move forward despite Petraeus' concerns, though he said he is still praying over the decision.

"We think it's time to turn the tables, and instead of possibly blaming us for what could happen, we put the blame where it belongs - on the people who would do it," Jones told the Associated Press. "And maybe instead of addressing us, we should address radical Islam and send a very clear warning that they are not to retaliate in any form."

Jones, who is also planning to move forward despite being denied a permit for the event, made headlines last year for distributing t-shirts reading "Islam is of the Devil."

The pastor, who reportedly carries a gun after receiving death threats over his planned protest, says supporters have been mailing him copies of the Quran for burning on the evening of September 11th.

Speaking of the Afghanistan protests over Jones' plan, Petreaus said, "I am very concerned by the potential repercussions of the possible burning."

"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he told the AP. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."

AMERICANS DO NOT HAVE RIGHTS. I DO NOT SEE HOW YOU CAN SAY YOU DO HAVE RIGHTS. THE GOVERNMENT TOOK THEM AWAY AFTER THE 60'S LITTLE BY LITTLE. THIS IS WHY YOU CAN NOT PROTEST WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM YOUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND YOUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT (TOWN) IS YOUR BIGGEST RESTRAINT. THIS WAS IMPLEMENTED AND PLANNED TO CONTROL US LONG AGO (40 YEARS NOW).YOU ALL HAVE NO RIGHTS. IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE ME TRY TO EXERCISE THEM WITHOUT ARREST. TRY TO SPEAK OUT IN PUBLIC WITHOUT ARREST. DO IT GO AHEAD AND YOU WILL SEE THE CONSTITUTION IS JUST A PIECE OF HISTORIC PAPER, MEANINGLESS TODAY.

We as a Universe were all conceived in the same way ? we were all born into this world the same way ? we learned and grew to become People ? Human Beings and we were all born with one thing in common ? the freedom of Free Will to choose, to respect one another, and to give to those who are in need of any and all things necessary for life. Life has become about good versus evil and we are the fuel that makes it happen ? by choice we did not choose peace we chose dishonor and bigotry to others. In this we have spat in the face of God ? the same God of all persons, of all nationalities, and of all religions ? he did not make the fighting of who is right or wrong ? he did not tell you to hurt one another for being different ? he wanted only peace for his world and the people in it.Through time there have been wars ? senseless, painful wars that have taken the lives of people who were fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters and so forth. They did not ask to die for you or for the cause they died for ? they did a job that they were called to do from one nation?s leader and they did it with tolerance and pain. These are the people who have died for peace and we have spat in their faces as well. People talk about radicals and extremists ? they are worldwide and in all walks of life, nationality, and religion. There are some who do it in secret and some who do it bold in your face ? but they are everywhere ? and through time we have always answered them with more wrong doing. The saying to turn the cheek was meant for a reason ? if one person rapes another, should we answer by doing the same ? if one kills another, should we answer with the same ? if one molests, ridicules, abuses, bullies, belittles, etc. and so forth ? should we do the same ? We as humans know what is right and for some reason we still choose to do the wrong thing ? why? Does it make a point for an answer to unnecessary pain caused to one and by one ? or is it just a way we can say we are superior? And what in that answer makes us superior? We still created pain in another and we did it with malice and knowledge of wrong. We can stand in line face to face - you could burn my holy book and I can in turn burn yours ? you could slap me in the face and I can in turn slap yours ? you could cut off my arm and I could in turn cut off yours ? you could take my life and in turn I would be dead ? does that mean you win? Or does it just mean that you did it first, so you are superior? And what did you win ? my life? What point did you make ? what dream did you grant ? what life did you better ? what words and actions will make you superior in this world? You would only be known as the person who took a life needlessly to make a stand for something that should have been attacked by knowledge and common sense ? reasoning and debates ? understanding and acceptance of humans and life.September 11 was a horrific tragedy in history that was not caused by one ? it was caused and created by many. We as a nation were at the forefront of blame and we all chose to blame others. We as a nation could have prevented, but chose to ignore ? when will we stand up for our own mistakes ? when will we stand up and learn to fight with knowledge and human kindness ? when will we as a universe choose to make the right choices for all of human kind? To stand by each other?s side and find the way to resolve issues collectively ? not divided ? now that will be a day we can stand up and be proud side by side, arm in arm ? all fighting for the same thing in a universe built for the same reason ? LIFE and GOOD!!!

Rev. Jones does strike me as a bit of a nut case and his actions (if he follows through) will not do our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan much good. This seems like a bad idea, even from the perspective of this agnostic who is hostile to all religions, especially Islam. But, it is noteworthy that every day, all over the world, Bibles, Torahs, and the flags of many nations are burned in one context or another, without generating much interest from most people. Muslims should be asking themselves why the actions of some minister in a corrugated steel church, burning his own private property (I assume he purchased his copies of the Quran to destroy, unlike the Taliban's destruction of Buddhas in Afghanistan), should be taken as such an affront. It's a free country, get used to it.Their sensitivity to incidents like this is one of the reasons why Americans are so distrustful of their intentions.

Will he accept responsibility for his actions? Will he accept the consequences of probable loss of life? My Lord, YOU CAN'T FIX STUPIDITY.

Also, America...don't believe what the common soldier from America may say. They are told what and what not to say, especially these days. So are we wimps of the inevitable or are we a strong community and nation? They declared war on us a few years ago. and if we don't show some power from citizens, then they win mentally! We all know that we have the more intelligent citizens in the U.S. is it wrong to be intelligent, brave, and strong at the same time? My ancestors would roll over in their grave if that pastor didn't follow through with this act of quran burning. It is announced! The preacher cant hold back now. It must be followed througgh. Oh, cab driver, there has always been racism you moron. People should wake up!!!!!!!!

I would bet most of the soldiers overseas want to see it burn. I bet the only one who doesn't is the general. I was over there too and I wouldnt have cared about the repercussions whatsoever. Whats up with all the wimp type Generals lately. War is here provoked by them. No American should retaliate? Then why are we there? You are going to let them knock down our biggest towers, in our biggest city, kill our people here ande there, and then let them manipulate our country like that? Why don't they build a mosque in the middle of the pentagon courtyard where another plane had crashed why your at it? That would be a better strategic spot to manipulate the U.S.A than ground zero. I mean since we are on a wimpy kid on the block kick anyway....

Whether Pastor Jones thinks he's right or not... he's doing wrong by burning ANYONE'S Bible. It's going to cause big problems for our troops & the American people, no God is going to condoan what he's going to do.Does he want someone burning HIS Bible??? We have many different religions in America,& I believe it is so wrong to be against anyone's religion. Our right is to pray to our God in our way & no one person can say we can't have our own Bible to learn from. There are things I'm against in this situation, but burning their Bible isn't going to fix anything.
