The White House today responded to news that nearly one in five Americans erroneously believe President Obama is a Muslim by telling reporters that the president prays on a daily basis.

"The President is obviously a -- is Christian," Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton said. "He prays every day. He communicates with his religious advisor every single day. There's a group of pastors that he takes counsel from on a regular basis. And his faith is very important to him, but it's not something that is a topic of conversation every single day."

Asked why people believe despite this that Mr. Obama is a Muslim, Burton responded, "I just think people are focused on other issues and not paying all that much attention to exactly what the President does with his spirituality. But as you all know and have covered extensively, he is Christian and his faith is very important to him."

A reporter asked if the president might want to "speak more about his religion to counter this perception that he isn't Christian."

"He has talked about his faith in the past," the reporter said. "Could the White House have him come out and talk about it more?"

"He has spoken about his faith extensively in the past," Burton replied. "You can bet that he'll talk about his faith again. You could always play the 'would-of, could-of, should-of,' but the President's top priority here isn't making sure that Americans know what a devout Christian he is, it's making sure that we're getting the economy on track and we're creating jobs in this country."

The Pew poll showed that nearly one in five Americans believe that President Obama is a Muslim. The percentage that correctly identifies him as Christian has fallen to just 34 percent, while 43 percent say they don't know what his religion is - an increase of nine points from last year.

Burton made the comments aboard Air Force One on route to Martha's Vineyard, where the first family is beginning a ten-day vacation.

Asked about the president's planned workload, Burton responded, "Well, he'll continue to get his intelligence briefings, and he'll also be getting briefings on the economy and other issues as they come up. But as any of you guys who have covered these vacations before know, there's other things that come up and he'll obviously attend to those as necessary."

I certainly hope that Obama is truly a christian, although his actions at times do not support his claim of the christian faith. Obama clearly does not like Israel and supports the Muslims, which is very contradictory for a believer to do. Believers know that the Jews are Gods chosen people and understand that no political force in the world will change that. Just today Iran was shooting off test missiles while Obama is vacationing at Martha's Vinyard. That is not the kind of leader that I want for our country. The White House says he prays everyday, but God does not hear the prayers of the lost.

a big point is missing here seoeration of church and state, we don't need another president talking directly to god. thats what the last one did, and i think he got the wrong number.

If it is enough of a question or controversy to get the White House staff doing spin control and some minister vouching for mr obama's character, wouldn't it save everyone a lot of trouble and curiosity if Mr Obama would just make a statement of his faith, or lack of, directly? The easiest way to confirm this is for him to say so, one way or the other.

So he kneels on his prayer rug and faces east as he prays? That does not make him a Christian.

jesus was a myth, no proof he ever existed outside the bible by any reputable historian, just like obama doesnt really exist cause I have never seen him, I guess I would have to look for his works to see he existed.. hmm, 4 million people lost their jobs in 19 months.. omg he does exist!!

If the president went to a Christian church (whatever that is) everyday. His critics would still critisize him for being in church too much.

Like his 6th Vacation in 18 months,or the fact that his 3 day campaign trip to 5 states cost the Tax payers 2 million dollars?

I bet that when you figure in all the security of all the towns and the planning and local security and transport of SS vehicles that it is far closer to $20 million!

I wonder if, when he prays everyday, he is facing Mecca? Praying every day does not make someone a Christian or even religious for that matter.

As such a big narcissist, he must be praying in front of his mirror.

Jesus talked about people like you.

He said you'd say Lord, Lord and he's cast you off "you never knew me"... and you sure do not!
