GOP Celebrates Missouri Vote "Rejecting ObamaCare"

Supporters of Missouri's Proposition C gather at the home of Pat and Margaret Walker to watch election results Aug. 3, 2010, in Town and Country, Mo.

/ AP

Missouri voters yesterday overwhelmingly passed Proposition C, a state law keeping the government from mandating that people have health insurance and from fining them for not purchasing it.

The requirement that people have health insurance is one of the key provisions of the health care bill signed into law in March, and Proposition C puts state law in direct conflict with the federal requirement, which goes into effect in 2014. Federal law generally supersedes state law, making the vote essentially symbolic.

Republicans are this morning hailing the vote as evidence of "the steadfast opposition of the American people to out-of-touch Washington Democrats' plan," in the words of House Republican leader John Boehner.

"The more the American people know about the Democrats' new law - with its job-killing mandates, tax hikes, and Medicare cuts to set up a new federal entitlement and massive new bureaucracies - the more they oppose it," he added. "How long will Washington Democrats ignore the will of the American people? What will it take for them to work with Republicans to repeal ObamaCare and replace it with commonsense reforms to lower costs?"

While Republicans are pointing to the ease with which the measure passed as evidence that Americans are overwhelmingly opposed to the Democrats' health care plans - Proposition C got 71 percent of the vote - opposition to the plan is not quite that high (though there is still more opposition than support). In a CBS News poll last month, 36 percent of Americans said they approve of the health care reform law, while 49 percent opposed it.

The GOP hopes that anger over the health care bill will help drive turnout in the midterm elections, and the enthusiasm of Proposition C supporters interviewed in this Post Dispatch story seems to give them more reason for optimism: One calls Proposition C "the vote heard 'round the world" while another said "This is going to propel the issue and several other issues about the proper role of the federal government."

In a statement, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said the vote was "a significant blow to the Obama administration."

"By rejecting ObamaCare with nearly three-quarters of the vote in a critical swing state, Missouri sent a clear message to Democrats and the Obama administration that government-run healthcare is a gross overreach of the federal government that needs to be repealed and replaced," he said. "...Last night's decisive vote against a key provision of ObamaCare, arguably the cornerstone of the Obama presidency, shows how completely detached the Democrat agenda is from the American electorate, and is another reason why Republicans will win back the majority in November."

At the conservative blog Hot Air, Ed Morrissey argues that "Democrats may have to hit the panic button after seeing the results from this swing state."

"Bear in mind that over 315,000 Democrats turned out to cast ballots in the primary that nominated Robin Carnahan, while over 577,000 Republicans hit the polls," he writes. "That is about a 65/35 split -- which means that a significant amount of Democrats either supported the ballot measure repudiating ObamaCare, or didn't bother to cast a vote to defend the program. Actually, Prop C got more votes than the combined voting in both Senate primaries -- which tells us something even more about the passion in the electorate."

Liberals just have no common sense, whatsoever. Missouri is on the right track. Maybe instead of the ridiculous Obamacare, we could have started with some simple steps like Tort reform cutting down on stupid lawsuits thereby reducing health providers' insurance (Dems refuse), saving hospitals by making illegals pay (or better yet enforcing immigration laws and defending the border), and selling across state lines driving down premiums. No, libs want government control on everything. Take a look at the care received in other countries with socialized medicine and compare; it will scare you. And it is not the high earners who should be taxed at higher rates to pay for everyone else. Plus, the government should not be able to mandate that anyone HAS to pay for anything. What is it with you people and BIG gummit?

It beats me how Repugs can't understand that the current system is destroying this country and all the dems are trying to do is fix it and provide for more Americans. It's astonishing when you realise that the majority of those opposed to this bill are the people that need it the most. Someone posted here a while back, that all it takes is ONE major illness for a dedicated and life-long Repug to become a RABID DEMOCRAT. Dumb Repugs !

HERE IS SOME HUGE NEWS: THE PEOPLE OF MISSOURI REJECTED MANDATES NOT HEALTHCARE REFORM. NOBODY LIKES MANDATES. THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT LIKE MANDATES ARE THE INSURANCE COMPANIES. EVEN IF THE SUPREME COURT SAYS YOU CAN'T HAVE MANDATES THEN ONLY THAT PART OF THE BILL WOULD BE INVALID. THE REST OF THE BILL WOULD STILL BE LAW. THE BIGGEST LOSER IN THIS SITUATION WOULD BE THE INSURANCE COMPANIES! VERMONT HAS UNIVERSAL CHILD HEALTHCARE WITHOUT MANDATES!

The problem with this is, that it was the Republicans that forced this provision of the bill because their big insurance company supporters wanted it. Republicans are just hypocrites as usual. I don't like that provision either and we can hope that part goes away before it is ever put in place, but it was the Republicans that made sure it was there in the first place.

OH yeah, the party of NO enjoys tearing down this country, that's been clear the 8 years of the bush regime's tenure and now as they attack the only president to even try to improve OUR country and OUR health care in the middle of a major recession and the repubiscum standing like a roadblock on everything and anything.

But I guess the repubiscum and bush's OIL friends and insurance friends enjoy their nice windfall profits, the oil co's quarter after quarter of record breaking profits on $4 a gal gas while claiming oil costs went up, and then there's the medical system fiasco where you can get health insurance if you dont mind forking over $1,500/mo and getting dropped the first time you actualyl USE it.
If you get cancer, may as well forget about keeping your home, car and personal stuff, because those $1800 MRI's and the tens of thousands of dollars in misc charges will certainly put you in bankruptcy.

Johnny, so why has Americans been accusing Repugs of being the party of NO and refusing to allow anything to pass ?? If the dems were truly a super majority, would it matter what the repugs vote ?? It's sad when REpugs spout anything in defense of the party instead of looking at actual Fact. Dumb Repugs - voting against their very own best interests !!

Thanks to Obama Care - and the limiting of our flexible spending accounts to 2K a year, I will have to decide between medication or doctor visits. I have always used my flexible spending account to cover dental visits, multiple doctor visit co-pays since I have an illness that requires me to visit the doctor every 8 weeks. I have health insurance but the flexible spending account allows me to afford dental visits and my medication that even with insurance cost me over $250 a month. Thanks Obama!!

This makes the case that the federal government CAN institute national health insurance over the states objections.

Duh.

The amount of misinformation on this subject is staggering.

Basic heath insurance for a single, middle-aged person, purchased through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts "insurance pool," is about $290 per month. This is *much* lower than what I've paid through workplace plans or can buy privately.

The Federal health care law does not require people to purchase health insurance through the government. You can get it through your job or buy it on the open market, if you wish. The key requirement is that you have health insurance.
