CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller passed along a pair of photographs from the beginning of the Obama family's weekend vacation to Bar Harbor, Maine. Check them out at left.

In the first shot, the president and his family take in the views atop Cadillac Mountain. In the second, after the jump, the president greets fellow visitors to Acadia National Park.

Mr. Obama and his family are planning to spend the weekend in Bar Harbor. They have no public events scheduled.

by TBRCenter August 13, 2010 8:57 AM EDT: This is not acceptable. Between vacations and the Clinton Wedding it is like salt in the wounds. We take vacations also. Within our budget of gas, money & time. We can go around the corner-Maybe! There is people on the streets, out of work, loosing their homes. The rich is the middle class, middle class is the poor class and poor class is beyond what is needed as an American. To hear of multi-million dollar weddings and so forth when many just want to hear they have a dollar period. They can not afford to save their homes, feed their family or go to a doctor. You have to be beyond comfort in monies or on public assistance. Those in between are screwed & the middle man supports the tribe so to speak. I am so glad the businesses were bailed out but now what. We the people can not afford to buy from them. They will be back to where they were. The bail out should of went to the people to re-start their spending and circulate money but the wrong people were saved. Americans are overwhelmed by expenses verses income. I wish we could be more joyous over weddings, vacations and things people deserve. Just not when so many people are without and it does not look like anything will get better at this rate. Every price tag is going up and soon they will be loosing out. This is not the America I was born in. Soon there will be so many BANS we will have to get a permission to go to the bathroom. America is the land of the free. With laws but free. I choose a better America. I choose to help the people that support it & I choose that one day we can celebrate vacations for everyone who deserves it because every back breaking working middle class man does!; Reply to this comment

If you know nothing about the economy, administration, governmental decision-making, so why send any comment? People should have some kind of self-discipline about letting everyone know they are so stupid it makes one sorry to have a democracy.

If the majority of people is plain stupid, so it almost surely makes the market a diminishing market and that is something not even the God almighty can (and if could, surely would not! That would be a sin!) turn to be prosperous. So it tells a message: Do not invest on that!

Why blame the president because the cause of your unhappiness is staring at you in the mirror!

Well, better not be nagging, because nagging is a waste of time and does not create anything. As they say in Russia, dogs bark on the roadside but the journey goes on...; Reply to this comment

Hey, I'd like a vacation in Bar Harbor. Course, that won't happen. I've been out of work for 2 years, and now am barely existing so it wouldn't seem prudent to spend money on a vacation when things are so uncertain.

I resent the Obama family vacation, not just because I can't afford a vacation myself but...he has done nothing to deserve a vacation. Get back to work and do something productive instead of just babbling what ever your speech writer's have given you. You're about as pathetic a president as this country's ever seen.

Just this past week, Obama finally got the BP oil spill capped, the financial reform bill passed, 94 crooks charged for $250 million fraud on Medicare, settled with Goldman Sachs for $550 million for their shady shenanigans on Wall Street. And that is just the hilights. The man certainly deserves some fun time on the week end. It was nice that he included his family.

president obama has taken 65 vacation days in 18 months, president bush took 120 vacation days in 18months!

I have no problem with the amount of vacation that Obama takes. I wish it would be permanent and he would take it in a far away land. The land of Oz would be fitting.

I am glad the First Family is at holiday in my birth state. I have family there still. The park they are visiting is just lovely and true I have memories of it when I was there as a girl. We took a day trip.That was in the 60s. I liked Thunder Hole. Maybe the First Girls will have their memories of it as well. Let them enjoy their holiday as a family. True the President is on holiday but never fully off the job he holds.

by wlhoppers July 17, 2010 2:17 PM EDT: I completely understand how someone in Obama's position would need time to regroup - the decisions made in that post have worldwide impact and shouldn't be considered when overly fatigued or stressed.

But I have to agree with larry0304, why doesn't Obama keep a low profile while he's on R&R? Personally, I do think he's taken too much time off given the mess we're in, and I would say that about anyone, black, white, brown, purple or green, who did the same. Obama loves to vacation, then pop up to proclaim "he's been involved to the fullest extent all along," and then go back on vacation. I'm sure he's a nice guy to drink a beer with and have over at your weekend BBQ, but president? Worst there's ever been.; Reply to this comment

Republicans still have that slave mentality. Black man should get no vacation, he should be shackled in the white house 24/7. They despise the fact that he is the president. Republicans seem to forget the fact that George Bush was on vacation even when he was at the white house. Bush would have done this country and the world a huge favor if he had not made any attempt to govern. If only he had just collected his pay and made no decisions, america and the world would be so much better of today.

Maybe these hikes will help someone lose some of those hips so they can more effectively promote good eating habits...come on if you have a platform you're supposed to set an example and I just shake may head at what I see in a dress, skirt, gown, slacks or shorts...can't imagine the bathing suit view.; Reply to this comment
