Obama: Petraeus "Won't Miss a Beat" in Afghanistan

President Obama today said he has full confidence in Gen. David Petraeus, the new head of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, to carry out his administration's strategy there. The president insisted the strategy will stay the same, and for now, so will his top civilian leaders in Afghanistan.

"We are in the midpoint of implementing the strategy we came up with last year," Mr. Obama said with respect to the war in Afghanistan. "Gen. Petraeus understands that strategy because he helped shape it. My expectation is he will be outstanding in implementing it, and he will not miss a beat because of the change in command in the Afghan theater."

The president said that part of the reason he is confident Petraeus will successfully carry out the strategy in Afghanistan is that Petraeus "helped write the manual for dealing with insurgencies" and is also intimately familiar with the players on the ground.

Mr. Obama yesterday nominated Petraeus to replace Gen. Stanley McChrystal in Afghanistan, after McChrystal made disparaging remarks about the administration in a Rolling Stone article. Lawmakers have promised Petraeus a quick confirmation process, but some are planning to press the general on the administration's intentions of beginning a draw down of forces in July 2011.

"We did not say that starting July 2011 suddenly there would be no troops from the United States or allied countries in Afghanistan," Mr. Obama said today. "We said we'd begin a transition phase in which the Afghan government is taking on more and more responsibility."

Some lawmakers are also calling for President Obama to make additional personnel changes to his Afghanistan team, starting with replacing U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry and Special Representative to Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke.

"I am confident that we've got a team in place that can execute" the administration's strategy in Afghanistan, Mr. Obama said. That said, he added, "I am playing very close attention to make sure that they execute it. I will be insisting on extraordinary performance."

"I am going to be insisting on a unity of purpose on the part of all branches of the U.S. government that reflects the enormous sacrifices being made by the young men and women who are there," he said. "My expectation is that the leadership is true to those sacrifices."

The president made his remarks during a press conference with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, after a bilateral meeting between the two.

Today's meeting was about "not simply resetting our relationship but also broadening it," Mr. Obama said. The meeting showcased the progress the two countries have made on a number of diplomatic fronts, such as signing a new major nuclear treaty and expanding economic ties.

These guys who are hating Obama fail to realize that when Obama came to office that there were only 30,000 troops in Afghanistan. There are now close to 95,000 troops there and growing. He game the generals almost everything they asked for but because Obama did not get on his knees and say, "Wow, General, you are wonderful, I wish I was like you" that the general felt betrayed.
Can you give some specifics fxr60? When we first went into Afghanistan in 2001 -- 2001 -- we were told by everyone in the world that we only had 2, may be three years to affect change. Instead, Bush invaded Iraq - taking his eye off the ball.
So spare me the Bush was the best commander and chief ever crappola.

Absolutely, he wont miss a beat because Obama was not letting anyone do anything. It is one thing to have a strategy to win and another thing to have an agenda to not win.

Yep, Vietnam the second. Afghanistan is just like Vietnam, you can't tell the bad guys from the good guys. The only way you know is if he doesn't stab you in the back when you turn around. You couldn't even trust a baby, they would wire them with granades so when you pick them up the place blows up.
There is only one way to win that war and that is the way McCrystal was doing it, with getting the people to trust him. Showing them that we are there to help, not to just roll over everything.
Funny though, isn't Afghanistan rich in natural resources? (Minerals)

I have to say that I agree with the decision as well, though for a different reason. It sounds as if Gen. McChrystal was bad for troop moral with his austerity measures. Imagine living through another day among the land mines, and snipers, looking forward to a little hamburger, or pizza from base, just to have to commander close the facilities down because "You don't have those in the field." What kind of logic is that? I understand his staff frequently missed meals, and didn't drink a lot of water because the general never stopped for these things. The body needs nutrients to think, and fight at its best. The lymphatic system, unlike the circulatory system, does not have a pump (the heart) at its center, and relies on hydration, and muscular contractions to pump the toxins out of the system. So Gen. McChrystal was undermining the sound functioning of both the bodies, and minds of all under his command, and providence has delivered the troops what I hope will be a more nurturing, and sophisticated chieftain.

McChrystal and his aides were just saying what a lot of people are thinking and saying-they just got caught at it with a liberal reporter that is a sleeze bag!! Have to watch these left wing radicals-they called Petraeus "Betray-us" when he was under Bush and came up with the surge and won the Iraq war that had 2-3 times more casualities daily among the Iraq people by the terrorist and the murdering Saddam than they have in Afghanistan. Now Obama and his ilk just "love" Petraeus and the lefties will fall in line behind the "pied piper" and change their tone now!!! What hypercrites!!!!
