Meg Whitman Plummets in Calif Polls, After Spending Millions

Meg Whitman AP

Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman's position in the California gubernatorial race has dropped precipitously in the most recent poll, in spite of the fact that she has poured tens of millions of her personal fortune into the race -- even setting a campaign spending record in California.

With less than a month before California's June primary, Whitman's lead over her GOP opponent, state insurance commissioner Steve Poizner, now stands at 38 percent to 29 percent among Californians likely to vote in the Republican primary, according to a survey from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC). About a third of voters remain undecided. Whitman's lead fell dramatically from March, when she was ahead of Poizner 61 percent to 11 percent.

In a general election match-up, Democratic State Attorney General Jerry Brown has a slight lead over Republican Whitman at 42 percent to 37 percent. This is a reversal from March, when Whitman led Brown 44 percent to 39 percent.

Whitman has spent $68 million of her own money on the race so far, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Whitman blasted the California airwaves with ads in March, according to the LA Times, but Poizner eventually made his own investments and gained traction with damaging attacks against Whitman's stance on illegal immigration (he called her too soft on the issue). As a billionaire, former business executive, Whitman was also hurt by the focus put on her ties to Goldman Sachs. Poizner also in a web video blasted eBay as a hub for pornography.

When documents showed in March how much money Whitman was spending in the campaign, Poizner said, "Never before in the history of the United States has someone so blatantly tried to buy an election. "

The L.A. Times reports Poizner has spent $24 million of his own money on his campaign.

I was not voting for Whitman because of her flip flop of herIllegal Immigration position! But then I dig deeper on why is she spending $68 million of her own money, did anyone ever consider that she is $68 million committed into fixing California. So many stupid people are calling this buying the job, but does't that make sense, buying a job that is so unpopular and in a sense to me this is as "pro bono" as it gets in this sense! She is losing +$67 million dollars for this thankless job! Maybe I will vote for her after all...

I hope Meg Whitman spends millions more to lose the primary. I'm one of the sellers from Ebay who knows how inept she really is. She was fired from H.P. after leaving Ebay, wonder why that hasn't been brought up.
I agree with the other comments about her business sense. She'll be worse than Arnold.

After money then comes power, she is power hungry, but she should save some of that money she is spending on her campaign and get a facelift,
hopefully better than Arnold's

Writer10 - the author of the book is neither slandering (spoken) or libeling (written) Meg. He's published portions of her deposition testimony, taken under oath. So if anything is inaccurate, it would be Meg who committed perjury. Maybe you should research before insulting others?

Add to the list that Meg opened the doors of Ebay to Chinese counterfeit sellers - who paid nothing to list on the site while Californians and Americans paid listing fees, final value fees and Pay Pal fees to list there. Meg is responsible for flooding California and the US with previously unheard of amounts of counterfeit goods - which resulted in the loss of thousands of American jobs. It undercuts our economy, jobs, research and development when you support Chinese counterfeiters like Meg did.

Meg also denied increased levels of funding to improve security at Ebay - including her insecure servers. Millions of hard earned American dollars lost to international scammers because Meg didn't want to take anything away from her gross and overly lavish salary to protect the users of the site.

Meg thinks she is above the common man. As evidence by buying her son out of trouble after he assaulted a professor at Stanford and called the professor racist names - this was a latino professor. Meg gave millions to make sure spoiled brat son wasn't kicked out. The same son who was arrested for drunk driving and Meg bought him out of that as well.

She's no leader. She another Bernie Madoff. I hope she spends every last penny on the election and has little left to live off of. It's called karma, baby. And she's got a lot of bad karma coming. She's earned it.

She's wasting her time, AND her tens of millions of dollars!

The more the public finds out about her, the more they'll decide to vote for the other candidate!

Nobody spends that kind of personal money without devious intent!

We know she's not planning to rob the California Treasurer's Office,
because 'CA' is billions in debt, so what's she up to?!

She is planning on a 'Palin' move. I am wagering she has her heart set on being the first female American President. So be governor of the largest state in the country for a year, quit and run for President. Would not surprise me one tiny bit....Why else spend all that personal wealth for a job that pays diddly squat. It's all about power. And she wants it.

There are many justifiable concerns with Meg Whitman as Governor of California:
1) Meg Whitman promoted and supported an unstable management structure at eBay.
2) Meg Whitman supported and retained managers / supervisors who sexually harassed others, while permitting the firing of their victims and those who stood up for... them.
3) Meg Whitman created and supported eBay's Porn site.
And these are ones that I have documented in my book.

$68 million??? To get in office? You could have your own sitcom for that money. The price of advertizing yourself is too much. What's the payback? That is the real question!

Exactly. The governor's salary is nothing near that.

Maybe all the Ebay sellers she's squeezed for every nickle and dime during her stay at Ebay are finally spreading the word. This is a spoiled rich tyrant who believes she can buy anything she wants...even the governorship of California! Don't be fooled...whoever you vote on either side of the aisle for is better then this person! She will try to charm you and tell you exactly what you want to hear in order to get your vote! This woman could care less about the little people like me and you who live and work in California!

Just put the Governorship up for bid on e-bay. What difference would it make since all politicians buy their way into office.

Whitman wants to buy the governors office. Why? The office is bankrupt and will continue to be so, unless she raises taxes, thereby forcing Californians to migrate to Arizona or Mexico.
