Obama Blasts Republicans for Not Supporting Economic Recovery Plans

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Distancing himself from today's Democratic primaries in which two his party's incumbent U.S. Senators are running for the political lives, President Obama dropped in on the rust belt to trumpet administration recovery efforts and blast Republicans for sitting on the sidelines.

"I saw the 85-ton electric arc furnace," the president told workers at V & M Star, a manufacturer of pipe and other tubular steel products. "I know you're building Iron Man's suits somewhere in here," he joked about current hit movie, eliciting polite laughter from his audience.

Here in a state where the unemployment rate stands at 11 percent, above the national average of 9.9 percent, Mr Obama tried to put Republicans on the defensive for not supporting his economic recovery plans.

"I think those critics who have been trying to bad mouth these efforts - they know its working," said the president.

He accuses some of them of opposing the programs but then taking credit for the progress, even attending the ribbon cuttings.

"If the just-say-no crowd had won out - if we had done things that way - we'd be in a deeper world of hurt," said Mr. Obama.

"Just imagine how much farther along we could be if we worked together - if I'd gotten a little help," he told his audience.

He said despite all "the naysayers in Washington, who are always looking for the cloud in every silver lining; the fact is our economy is growing again."

In a cavernous plant filled with the pipes manufactured here, including some for the oil drilling industry, Mr. Obama said his programs have helped companies such as V & M Star to expand - and will bring other dormant factories to life.

"We could sit back, do nothing, make a bunch of excuses, play politics and watch America's decline - or we could stand up and fight for our future," said the president.

Mr. Obama announced a new agreement to help other communities like Youngstown revitalize and redevelop "shuttered GM facilities, preparing them for new industries, new jobs, and new opportunity."

"That's a success story that you're all a part of," he told plant workers.

It's programs like that, he said, that helped produce the surge in new payroll jobs last month - and the most manufacturing jobs since 1998.

He said he knows his federal aid programs were not popular, be he thinks Republicans are the ones who need to apologize for trying to obstruct them.

This man is a communist. I won't give up my hard earned money so he can give it away to people who don't want to work. If you can't get a job in this country, then you just aren't trying.

You are simply a fool. Olyboy; what in the h-ll are you talking about? I grow so tired of Regan Republicans. You do nothing but complain. You have driven our nation so close to being a third world power because you do not want to pay for the right to live in this country - for what? You and your ilk are worthless. If you do not want to help this country get back on it's feet then just get out of the way!

Your "just say no" politics are your answer to a crisis that can only be compared to the Great Depression. Your politics have created a world of 11% unemployement! You selfish, self-centered, self-serving bigots are destroying the nation!!!

Is this the best you can do??? Call the President of the United States a Commuinist!!! You do not deserve to even look at the rest of us. Move to Chile! I think they like your kind. It's for sure most of us are tired of you.

All this talk about how many new jobs have been created - that's wonderful. Now, why doesn't someone do the obvious and compare that number to how many people lost their job DURING THAT SAME PERIOD? If they had, it would be clear that the number of initial claims for unemployment benefits far outpaces the number of new jobs created. And they look for other reasons why the unemployment rate is climbing???

Actually these two numbers are not correlative. Easy, very simplified explanation: A new job and a lost job are not the same job.

Besides, UI claims haven't outpaced new job creation consistently. The UI rate is not climbing... it is inching upwards. It will hit a top number and then begin to fall.

Please look into Economics to understand this, not politics. The government is really not so big that it is responsible for EVERYTHING... that is a totally ridiculous notion!

When I think of my poor representation by my congressman Jeff Miller, I clearly see that my community would be far better off with a Democrat.

I have personally written letters to my representative and received lame replies filled with excuses and his failure to credit the Obama administration for the success with economic recovery that began with the bail outs and stimulus packages before he was elected.

I desire better representation than Jeff Miller and the republican party. I will get it and the country and state of Florida will be better off with more Democrats. I applaud President Obama and Nancy Pelosi and hope to see their agenda completed all the way to 2016 when the presidency is awarded to Hillary Clinton.

I've written four letters on the same subject to my dem representatives Betty Sutton, Sherrod Brown and got the same form letter back from them everytime. I sent one letter on the same subject to George Voinovich my republican senator and got a very detailed reply back from him on the subject I addressed. So as far as I'm concerned all democrats could care less about me since I am a registered Independent. So I could care less about any democrat politician. And Obama even said it in a speech he and the dems are only looking for minority and womans votes. I'll vote independent candidates unless they jumped from dem or repub to independent.
by velma179 May 18, 2010 8:20 PM EDT
Damn!

Stop with the lies retm-w.

Obama never gave a speech where he said he was "only looking for minority and womans votes".
You are referring to an online OFA open forum event where he spoke to supporters about the need to encourage the same voters that came out in 2008 to stay involved. The number one group mentioned was young people -- which are male and female and consist of every racial origin.

You are a bitter partisan. Yes, you are. You will only vote for Independents "unless they jumped from dem or repub...".

That is totally [in the spirit of] partisanship. Why don't you love your country enough to vote for the BEST candidate, regardless of party affiliation or non affiliation.

That's tragic in our representative republic.

Obama has to blame someone he is not in his office enough to govern himself let alone the country. All he does is Campaign and travel,he has been to Ohio and Iowa more than all the other Presidents put together. I think he is looking for a place to live in 2012 when he leaves the White House.

Since you don't know Democrats are still in the Majority, stormerF3... do you really think anyone will buy into more of your baloney?

Really. It's sad to see someone who doesn't know simple facts try their best to discredit someone else.

America is a far better place than the parts of her sum...

Of course repubs oppose anything along the lines of recovery.

Ah, knock it off, formr, what you define as "recovery" is what many others see as reckless government deficit spending and endless bailouts. So guess what - there will be opposition. But you didn't like Republican "yes" votes under Bush and now you don't like Republican "no" votes under Obama. Too bad.

Reckless government deficit spending is something new to you? Endless bailouts? Where, to whom?

Is the glue for your model airplanes leaking?

Economists are in agreement that the US economy is recovering from the serious recession that came to a head in 2008.

It is not completely healthy yet, but it is in recovery. This is not a matter of political rhetoric, it is verifiable by economic indicators. The ratio of unemployment to new employment classically lags behind other areas of economic recovery.

The legislation in question is necessary in order to forestall the same type of bust/boom cycles that busted us most recently. Regulation is a very important part of healthy capitalism.

Please try to understand the facts without applying your political/partisan ideology to every thing -- it really helps when one wants to make a cogent argument.

The Democrats had a Majority for more than a year and yet we are still at close to 10% un-employment,Why is it the Republicans fault Obama's programs have failed? what programs is he talking about anyway? I thought the Stimulis passed? It still has not created the 3-4 million jobs Obie promised.
by velma179 May 18, 2010 6:36 PM EDT
The Stimulus was not a job creation bill, though it did have job creation as a component.

The money hasn't yet all been spent. A large portion has always been slated for disbursement in 2011.

Doing things efficiently often means not doing them in a rush.

PS -- The Democrats STILL have a Majority. Are you really this unaware of reality, today?
