No-Fly List Procedures Changed Following Terror Attempt

CBS

In the wake of Faisal Shahzad's arrest aboard an airplane at JFK airport on Monday night, the Obama administration has changed the procedures for the no-fly list.

A White House official told CBS News that airlines will now have to check the list within two hours of notification of an update with special circumstances, such as happened on Monday. Previously, airlines only were required to check within 24 hours.

The changes come following questions about how the alleged attempted Times Square car bomber was able to board an Emirates flight bound for Dubai despite being identified as a suspect and added to the no-fly list earlier in the day.

The White House official said Emirates seemingly didn't check the new update for Shahzad before he was allowed to purchase a ticket and board the plane. He was captured after a customs agent noticed the name and called the plane back to the gate before takeoff.

The new rules go into effect today.

how do they know they've checked it? if they don't have a way to verify it's being checked ... this is all just posturing ... so that everyone can 'feel good' about the government 'protecting' you.

they can't protect you ... and they won't protect you. the only reason there hasn't been multiple incidents w/ many deaths in the last year or so is that these so called 'terrorists' are pretty stupid and can't seem to get out of their own way when attempting their terrorist fare.

these are the same bozos who were telling you the economy is perfectly sound ... just before it took the biggest dump in generations.

All people on the no-fly list should be issued IDs which they must present to TSA agents before boarding the aircraft. Then, the highly trained TSA agents would be able to recognize and stop the terrorists before they boarded the airplane. Problem solved.

The TSA should check no fly list before a passenger can go to their gate. A perosn on the list would be stopped in the security checkpoint
area and away from the boarding area.

skyk-2009,

Do you work in the WH? What was excellent about it? The fact that the airlines were required to update the no fly list 24 hours after notification? The fact that the suspect boarded the plane? The fact that the plane had left the gate? The fact that they were planning on arresting him later that evening at his home? Or would it be the fact that the agents watching him lost this terrorist when he learned that officials were after a Connecticut man of Pakistani origin?

Yes, skyk-2009 has a vested interest in promoting the administration's agenda. No...not located in the White House. However, in this instance (other than the tired rhetoric) I agree with the fundamental message. This was a success story and all involved deserve credit.

The media is trying to let the illegals side under the rug. WE THE PEOPLE need to stay on it. We need to get these blood sucking leeches out of the United States. We need to send the military to the Mexican border to stop this invasion of illegal Mexicans. America is under attack. It must be stopped. The Mexicans are causing much more damage to this country than the Taliban.

[THEY ONLY HAVE TO BE LUCKY ONCE...WE HAVE TO BE LUCKY ALL THE TIME. ]

which one is more likely to occur?

this is fundamentally the reason why bashing muslims over the head w/ a 'stick' will never yield any safety from those who want to bring harm to u.s. interests.

only changing policy that creates the conditions that inspire these attempts at being lucky will reduce the incidents of those trying to be lucky.
