Poll: Most Say Sex Abuse by Priests Remains a Problem

CBS
CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto.

Most Americans, including Catholics, believe the Vatican has done a poor job handing child sexual abuse by priests, according to a new CBS News/New York Times poll. And while there is a perception that the Vatican has shifted away from covering up alleged cases, nearly three in four Americans believe child sexual abuse by priests remains a problem.

Just 13 percent of Americans, and 31 percent of Catholics, say the Vatican has done a good job handing child sexual abuses cases. Two in three - including 58 percent of Catholics - say it has done a poor job. Catholics who attend mass every week are split on the question.

A majority of both Americans overall and Catholics say the Vatican's handling of the issue has not had an effect on their perception of the Catholic Church. But among those whose perception has shifted, it has not been in a positive direction.

Thirty-six percent of Americans, including one in five Catholics, say the Vatican's handling of the situation has left them feeling more negatively about the Church than they used to. Just four percent feel more positively.

There is some relatively good news from the Church's perspective: More people say the Vatican is trying to prevent child sex abuse (50 percent) than say the Vatican is trying to cover up the problem (33 percent). Asked what the Vatican had done in the past, 80 percent said it had worked to cover up the problem, while just six percent said it had tried to prevent abuse.

Catholics have somewhat more positive perceptions: Three in four say the Vatican is now trying to prevent abuse, while 17 percent say it is trying to cover it up.

Still, 55 percent of Catholics say child sexual abuse by priests remains a problem. Among Americans overall, that figure is 73 percent. Just 14 percent of Americans do not believe child sexual abuse by priests is a problem today.

Two in five Americans have "some" confidence that the Vatican can prevent future abuse, and 14 percent have a lot of confidence. Still, thirty-nine percent have little to no confidence the Vatican can prevent abuse.

Catholics' Views and Perceptions of the Pope:

Four in ten Catholics say reports of child sexual abuse have caused them to doubt the Vatican's authority. Fifty-five percent say the reports have not caused such doubts.

More than three in four say a person can be a good Catholic while not accepting the Pope's authority.

Despite their concerns, fewer than one in ten Catholics say the abuse reports have led them to question whether they will remain in the Church. And the vast majority say the reports have not had an effect on their level of comfort with their own priest or their donations to church.

Pope Benedict XVI receives favorable views from America's Catholics, though Americans overall view him negatively. Forty-three percent of Catholics have a favorable view of the pope, up from 27 percent in March. Seventeen percent have an unfavorable view.

Yet just 16 percent of Americans overall have a favorable perception of the pope, and 24 percent have an unfavorable perception. Nearly six in ten are unsure or haven't heard enough.

Roughly half of Catholics consider Benedict's leadership to be a mixed blessing. Twenty-five percent say his leadership has helped the Church, while 15 percent say it has hurt.

Then-Pope John Paul II fared better on this question when it was asked in April 2002: Then, 46 percent said his leadership had helped the Church, and just five percent said it had been a negative.

CBS

More than half of Catholics say the Vatican is out of touch with everyday Catholics. Two-thirds of Catholics would allow priests to marry, and nearly six in ten would allow women to be ordained as priests.

CBS

Catholics generally do not believe child sexual abuse is more common in the Catholic Church than in other walks of life. They are divided on whether celibacy and homosexuality are a major factor, minor factor or non-factor in child sexual abuse.

Most Americans believe media reporting on abuse allegations has been fair, but Catholics are split, with nearly half saying the issue has been blown out of proportion.

And while Americans overall are most likely to say the media treat the Catholic Church the same as other religions, 64 percent of Catholics say the press corps has been harder on their church.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1079 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone April 28-May 2, 2010. Phone numbers were dialed from RDD samples of both standard land-lines and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher.

An oversample of Catholics was interviewed, for a total of 412 interviews. The results were then weighted in proportion to the adult population. The margin of error for the sample of Catholics is five points. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

The facts remain, no one has been held accountable-either for the pedophilia or for the cover up--which allowed this to go on for such a long period of time.

Your children are in a catholic school by choice therefore you will hear a lot about this until people are prosecuted.

Until the pope, cardinals, bishops and priests and any other knowing affiliation of the catholic church is ready to step forward and admit their wrong-doing--the hositlity and anger at the catholic church will prevail as long as these criminals are walking around thinking a few hail marys and a penance will make it go away.

I'm waiting for the Pope to deport Cardinal Law from the Vatican back to the USA, Boston to face possible criminal charges for his role in covering-up the rapes by his perverted priests, ASAP Also, I'm waiting to the Vatican to open up all their files on their perverted priests and turn them over to the proper legal authorites ASAP.
Do you think that will happen in our era???

cleric60, almost all of the pedophile priests in the Boston Diocese were appointed and ran rampant undert Cardinal Cushing. Law inherited the mess. He quickly defrocked Father Shanley who went on to become one of the founders of NAMBA. The other egregious pedophile Father Geohagan was sent for psychiatric help and was deemed "cured" of his pedophilia and Cardinal Law was assured by the psychiatrist that Geohagan was no longer a risk. Maybe we should be looking at prosecuting the psychiatrists first for their part in perpetuating these crimes?

owlafaye, you might want to check your history. The Cathars were sexual perverts and many who were brought before the Inquisition were heretics who fostered heresy that justified their own perversions. Case in point Giles de Rais who use diddle little boys and then tortured them to death. He was found guilty by the Inquisition. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilles_de_Rais And then there was the Neo Platonist, Tommaso Campanella, who also faced the Inquisition, he spent his remaining years prison. His crime is you listen present day apologists was his philosophy, but it was his philosophy which he used to justify his pedophilia.

All who doubt the severity of the sexual abuse in the Catholic church only need to go to bishopsaccountability.com for one of the most comprehensive sets of records on these abuses in the world.

Denial is popular but it is not a river in Egypt...it is the reaction of very narrow minded, ill-informed, uneducated people.

The very history of Catholicism is extreme corruption, sexual perversion, torture, rape, pillage, assasination and the very suppression of civilization, knowledge, enlightenment and the positive advancement of man.

owlalaye, you might want to expand you scope of vision. You will find more than enough material on rabbis sexual abuse at http://www.theawarenesscenter.org/The_Awareness_Center/Home.html. Voluminous cases of Protestant minister sexual abuse can be found at http://www.reformation.com/. Happy hunting.

Well blackjack, you seem to miss the point...it is not justified just because other groups are doing it. It is something that makes the Catholic Church a NOTHING...it denies any claim to spirituality, leadership, accountability, principles, morals or trust.

The Catholic Church is pedestrian, ordinary, picayune, weak, less than plebian and in a courtship with the very evil they hypocritically rail against.

owlafaye says:
Hardly an adequate number polled, considering the 60 million or so Catholics in America. What about the 'Cafeteria Catholics' and those that don't attend church regularly not to mention baptized Catholics that have never participated in the religion yet are counted by the church as "members" "Once a Catholic, always a Catholic"??? Then lets dig up some and ask them.

As to the Catholic church being no worse statistically than the rest of society? Is anyone paying attention...Catholics are using this as an excuse? Leaves no room for "moral authority" claims then, does it? Essentially, the Catholic Church is saying they are just as ordinary and normal as the rest of society with no particular moral authority of principles to bally-hoooo...shammers, spin masters, flagellants and apologists...crawling out of the woodwork and attempting to thwart man and history. Nothing new here. When are we going to AT LEAST tax this criminal organization?

I'm sure, since CBS is aware of how few sexual abuse cases are actually happen, that they will feel it their duty to inform the masses, since so many people have misconceptions about the truth. Or maybe they'll just print an article that seems to make things worse.

Fact is, the Catholic Church is one of the most pedophile-free organizations in the world today.

What does this question mean: "Is child sex abuse by priests still a problem today?". Is the question whether it is still happening as of today? How should the vast majority of people know? It's not that most of us are or know people that have been recently molested. Even then, how could you possibly make a statistical assumption about this?

I am sickened by the abuse that happened but I believe 99% was before 1980. There are so few priests now,and they are so old that it is not a current issue. The headline is bizarre as it is demonstrably not true and more than you can say "Russian spying is our number one problem"- they are in the same timeframe. I am a parochial school parent of 2 and my life would be easier without this. Ironically I have 2 "friends"who forward this stuff to me all the time to get my goat- they live in lily white suburbs that they grew up in(one in their parents house) and forward all kinds of hate articles on every minority or person who made some bad decision along theway.
