Poll: Obama Approval Rating Stands at 51 Percent

CBS
CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto.

President Obama's approval rating, buoyed by improved perceptions of his handling of the economy, stands at 51 percent in a new CBS News/New York Times poll.

Thirty-nine percent say they disapprove of the president's handling of his job according to the poll, which was conducted between April 28th and May 2nd.

Both the president's approval and disapproval ratings are essentially unchanged from mid-April, though they have recovered from the beginning of last month, when Mr. Obama's approval rating hit an all-time low of 44 percent. The new poll suggests that perceptions of the economy and the president's handling of it have improved, particularly among independents.

Forty-one percent now say the economy is getting better, up from 33 percent in April and just seven percent in January 2009. And while 54 percent said the economy was getting worse in January of last year, when the president took office, just 15 percent say so today.

Still, 72 percent say the national economy is in bad shape - a drop from last month but a far cry from October of 2007, when fewer than half of Americans described the economy as bad.

Americans remain particularly concerned about the job market. Thirty-four percent are "very concerned" someone in their household might be out of work and looking for a job in the next year. Another 30 percent are somewhat concerned. Just 35 percent say they are not concerned.

There has been little movement in perceptions of how Mr. Obama has handled health care or foreign policy. Despite a push to improve perceptions of the health care bill, just 44 percent approve of the president's handling of the issue.

That's a modest increase from last month's 41 percent figure, but it falls short of the 48 percent who disapprove of the president's handling of health care.

On foreign policy, 48 percent approve of Mr. Obama's handling of the issue, while 38 percent disapprove.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1079 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone April 28-May 2, 2010. Phone numbers were dialed from random digit dial samples of both standard land-line and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher. It is amazing what President Obama and the Democratic party have done to rescue this country from the political terrorism of Karl "Turd Blossom" (Bush's nickname) Rove and Dick "The Anti-Christ" Cheney. After they almost destroyed what Americans had struggled to build for over two centuries, the democrats have the country back on track. The illeriate and racist faction that is so hateful towards President Obama is a small and dwindling segment of our great country. Thank God for that.

Welp, seeing how the economy is no longer on the brink of complete collapse and you still have a CBSNews message board to post your cliche, moronic, and completley regurgitated GOP talking points on, I'd say the current crew is doing one hell of a job.

And yes, we will continue to bash Bush -- the guy was the worst President in U.S. history and steered the ship directly into the iceberg. Meanwhile, Obama's pulled us out of the water. Facts speak for themselves, despite how much you hoopleheads try to offuscate them.

Not on the brink of complete collaps? You're positive of that? BO swore unemployment wouldn't go over 8% if his stimulus bill passed and now we're in our sixth month of 9% or more unemployment. He also was sure the healthcare bill would be only $900 billion (newsflash, it just surpassed $1.4 trillion) and economy aside, Obama's been the most insulting, un-American, un-presidential president in my memory. I can go back to Johnson.

Don't worry Mosihasteen. Ending the BUSH war in IRAQ will pay for the healthcare bill easily. Don't you think that's money better spent ?

hahahahahaha....yeah, there's only 307,000,000 ppl in this country. How SHOCKING that you and your 10 idiot friends haven't been chosen by CBS News as part of a random sample. Moron.

True. CBS know what population segment to choose from so they can perpetuate their bogus assertions about BO and how well he's doing. 51% are you people serious? He'll be remembered as one of the worst in US history by the end of another four years. People are already looking back at Bush thinking he wasn't so bad after all.

Are you kidding me ? Bush was bad by ANY measure. Total clown !!!! BO has done more good in 1 year than Bush did in 8. How can you even have any affinity for George Bush ? That is amazing 2 me !!!!

Surprise, surprise. A republican who doesn't understand even the basics of statistical analysis. Then again, you guys live in a completely manufactured reality, so it's no shock that you're completely clueless as to how quickly you're becoming a very LARGE (albeit, noisy) minority in our country.

51% huh... Well, I would like to know who exactly you are polling. If you read the comments on the news blogs you will find that his approval rating should be about 20% because 80% are completely against his policies of increased governmental control and dictatorial laws. Perhaps you are polling the people who have something to gain from the socialism that the Democratic Party is pushing so hard for. I do know this though, neither have you have not EVER asked me nor anyone one I know, and I know a lot of people.

Pelosi, Reid, and their minions promised big things when they got elected. Well, we all saw what happened, then they blamed it on Bush. Well, they can't do that now. The people have spoken, they don't want them, they want their country back. When this healthcare bill passed with backroom deals, and 60 some percent of Americans against it, that tells us that they don't care what we want. They just want more money and power. Plain and simple.

Get over the "backroom deal" thing. He just did what Republicans have been doing for years !!!! Now how do YOU like it !!!! At least he did what he thought was best for the American people. Not for his own selfish personal interests like BUSH and CHANEY.

obiwan2112 says:
51%?!!!! Who did they poll on this? The members of ACORN? He is in the tank. His overall approval rating is -14 as of today May 8th. You can't sugar coat it or B.S. people. The tidal wave of emotions from his scripted speeches are long gone. Reality has set in, and people know they made a HUGE mistake. Maybe after the mid-term elections, some of the mess can be cleaned up, and in 2012, he will surely lose in a landslide, then we can take America back, and get her on the right track.

Lose in a landslide in 2012 ? Who the hell is going to run against him ? Palin and Jindal ? NOW THAT'S A SCARY THOUGHT !!!!!

Ok. we have a democratic run government for the most part. There is no more excuse now up until the next election for what happens. If the state of the union in in better shape, more power to them. If the state of the union is in worse shape by then, no more excuses and be prepared to step aside.

So, stay STRONG. Stay proud. And just continue to ignore them like they did us for eight LONG years. Maybe, at the end of this...we'll both be able to look back and say, "Okay. Alright. No more all about only me. Let's work this out together." Maybe.

Good Advice! : )
