Tom Coburn Knocks Fox News, Says Nancy Pelosi is a "Nice Person"

Sen. Tom Coburn, a staunch conservative from Oklahoma, is doing what seems almost unthinkable in this polarized political climate: Defending his Democratic colleagues from critics at Fox News.

At a town hall meeting, Coburn suggested that a woman who said "they can put us in prison" for not obtaining health insurance under the health care reform bill is misinformed.

"The intention is not to put anybody in jail," he said. "That makes for good TV news on Fox but that isn't the intention."

He also defended House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the architect of the House version of the health care legislation that he fiercely opposed.

"I'm 180 degrees in opposition to the speaker -- she's a nice lady," he said. The crowd could be heard responding unfavorably to his characterization.

"Come on now, she is a nice -- how many of you all have met her?" continued Coburn. "She's a nice person. She's a nice person."

"Just because somebody disagrees with you doesn't mean they're not a good person," he added. He then discussed his own experience of being vilified before asking the crowd not to  "catch yourself being biased by Fox News that somebody's no good."

"The people in Washington are good," he said. "They just don't know what they don't know."

Coburn's comments were recorded by radio station KGOU and reported by Capitol News Connection, where audio clips are posted.

The senator urged his audience to "stay informed on the issues" and not "just watch Fox News or CNN -- watch 'em both." He said he reads the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal every day to "get a perspective" and "know what other people's thoughts are -- not just what I hear through a pipe channel."

"I do a lot of reading every day, and I'm disturbed that we get things like what this lady said and what others have said on other issues, that are so disconnected to what I know to be the facts," he said. "And that comes from somebody that has an agenda that's other than the best interests of our country."

It's rare (and perhaps something of a risk) for a Republican lawmaker to criticize Fox News, whose hosts are generally supportive of the GOP agenda and can be a powerful force with grassroots Republicans. Coburn's comments cut against the suggestion by some Democrats that Republican lawmakers have been inflaming sentiment against them -- and could be putting them at risk of violence.

Coburn has been in the news recently for blocking a stopgap bill to provide jobless benefits because it is not paid for; he also participated in the flood of amendments to the health care reconciliation bill designed to slow passage by offering an amendment mandating no Viagra for sex offenders.

But Coburn, a doctor, was also an active participant at the bipartisan health care summit, where he addressed cost containment and made what President Obama called "some powerful points."

Coburn; are you suffering from myopia or just plain stupid? If I were a constituent in OK, I would help vote your idiotic crap out of office. Pelosi is NOT nice. Not NOW, not EVER. Nice people don't lie to their nation. Nice people don't threaten members of their own party. Nice people don't blackmail other members to get a vote. Nice people don't threaten the opposition with arrest and phony charges. Pelooser has done all of these things and more you insipid jackass.

Would Nancy Pelosi say the same about Rush Limbaugh or Sarah Palin?
Doubt it the left would go nuts.

The bottom line is that you cannot both insult and influence people at the same time. If you want to disagree with me, fine...but insulting people and name-calling is childish and will get you nowhere. It certainly won't persuade me that you might be right.

Someone who disagrees with what I say in a well-reasoned and civil manner always has my respect and I will respond accordingly.

Calling me names and insulting me only persuades me to fight even harder against you at all costs...and that's no way to try to solve our nation's problems.

Coburn is being a jackass which is unusual for him. Nancy Pelosi is what the U.S. Constitution refers to as a "domestic enemy". How anyone can consider a person who seeks to dismantle the Constitution and inflict a soft/hard tyranny upon the citizenry as a "nice person" is someone who's spent far too much time in Washington where even a mass murderer like Kim Jong Il would be treated with respect.

Coburn has lost sight of the big picture, which is that tyrants are not nice people even when they put the handcuffs on you while smiling and complimenting the cuteness of your children.

Pelosi is a wannabe Madame Mao. She's EVIL. Satan always seeks to connive, persuade and trick with a silver tongue, as do his minions like Pelosi. He doesn't try to knock you down and spit on you. He's a deceiver, not a bully in the obvious sense. She's Orwellian. Coburn is appearing naieve which is atypical for him. He needs to get back to Oklahoma so some decent people can shake him and remind him of his oath and duties, not his countryclub DC "comity".

I am so thankful for the Fox news network. I realize and admit that they aren't perfect and I don't like all their programming, but they are so far above the leftwing, in the tank for Obama networks it's not funny. I click over to msnbc and cnn to see what's going on there (for as long as I can stand it) and all they ever do is play to themselves. You almost never see a conservative there to balance the rhetoric of keith, chris and rachel. It's sickening. You can spit all your dumbing down baloney all you want, but the fact is Fox is helping educate the average person as to all the crap that is being put on them from the left, and you just don't like that. Well, too bad, it's called freedom.

Anyone getting an education from Fox news would be beyond reason. Some people like the freedom to be stupid. That's where Fox news comes in to fill in a void.

I think the main point this man is trying to make is that we are all Americans and it would be nice to see some civility. Probably anyone younger than thirty doesn't know what that word means. Instead of acting like fools and screaming at each other, making death threats, etc., maybe we should be civil to each other. Looks like Mr. Coburn is making a effort. Instead of the whacked-out tea party, I suggest we join the "coffee party" and start acting like adults.

Nancy Pelosi a nice person? Compared to what? Anyone who refers to U.S. Citizens as "wearing swaztikas" because they disagree with her politically is not a nice person. It seems that if you don't agree with her or the liberals, then you are less of an American, or maybe just not as smart as her? Ha, Ha! So why stop at healthcare? Why not housecare, carcare, foodcare, utilitiescare, heck, even toiletpapercare. Anything anyone wants or needs should be provided by the government. Just like in the good ole' Soviet Union.........oh yeah, that didn't work after all, did it?

I think you just confirmed his point. Ditto-heads in action.

Certainly, you had better watch out....look for boogey-man under your bed every nite after you say your prayers and go to sleep. Paranoia makes people think very strange things.

Coburn will be lionized, if not demonized, by the neo's for his comments.

Look what they did to Powell and others who don't march in lock step.
