Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), the legislator who has led a group of House Democrats who oppose the Senate health care bill because of its abortion language, says his life has become a "living hell" because of the debate.
"All the phones are unplugged at our house -- tired of the obscene calls and threats," Stupak said in an interview with the Hill. His wife no longer watches television, he said, because of "people saying they're going to spit on you and all this. That's just not fun."
His congressional offices have been inundated with phone calls, e-mails and more than 1,500 faxes on the issue -- most from people outside of his district, Stupak said.
"My staff is overwhelmed and we're accosted basically wherever we go by people who disagree," Stupak said in an interview on MSNBC. "We should have disagreements in this country. I for one am standing on a principle most Americans agree with."
Stupak has insisted the Democrats' health care bill should include language to ensure that federal dollars are not used to fund abortions. He managed to get Democratic leaders to add strict language to the House health care bill limiting abortion coverage, and the Senate bill added similar language.
Stupak says, however, that the Senate health care bill does not go far enough, and he claims there are about a dozen Democrats who will vote against the Senate bill with him.
A number of legislators and advocacy groups disagree with Stupak, including leaders of religious orders representing 59,000 Catholic nuns who announced yesterday they find the Senate bill's abortion language acceptable. A couple of other anti-abortion rights House Democrats -- Reps. Dale Kildee of Michigan and James Oberstar of Minnesota -- also said yesterday they are reassured the Senate language is acceptable. Kildee plans to vote for the bill; Oberstar initially said he would vote yes, but his spokesperson told the New York Times that Oberstar was "a strong likely yes."
Stupak told the Hill, however, that he still has 12 House Democrats willing to vote against the Senate bill because of the abortion language.
These situations DO happen and the legislation being proposed may be saving some babies but it will definitely be killing others.
Ponder this, if abortion is made illegal, it will be saving some babies, but it will definitely be killing mothers and babies where pregnancy complications arise.
Think of it this way, before abortions were legal, women would seek back alley abortions, and they will again even if abortion legislation is passed. I assume that the mother would them be convicted for murder if the abortion was found out, if she survives the operation.
Have people REALLY thought this through? How many lives will be destroy by holding such a polarized position?
Oh what.
It wasn't his wife. It was his country.
Back in the 60?s the Federal Government came into the public schools and brainwashed us as little children with the message that the children we were about to have were unwanted because the population was rising so fast. They launched a program called, ?Zero Population Growth?. They pushed Family Planning and birth control pills. Now they call the same programs, "Safe Sex" but the results are the same. I think you and I both know that you only have to trick people for their few child bearing years and there is no going back.
Many of us never had a say in the future of our unborn.
I am the result of two living cells. One from each of my parents. They are the result of two living cells, one from each of their parents. I wasn't just born. I am a continuation of life. I am a living thing that reaches back into time perhaps 400 million years and the result of billions of joining of pairs of cells. It is possible that if you were to follow my cells back to my parent?s cells and beyond that my family tree touches every living thing here on earth. That is if we limit ourselves to believing life was created here on earth. If it rained down from the immensity of the universe it could reach back into that immensity of time and space, and who knows what relationships and who knows what species.
My family line succeeded, at least until I came up against the Federal Government.
I have seen the Federal Government do little else to control the population.
The open borders, United States laws only apply to some, is a serious slap in the face. No. Not a slap in the face. It reaches well beyond that. Maybe back to the beginning of time and stretch to the bounds of the universe.

Stupak should probably reconsider, if he can't take the word of 59,000 nuns who can he believe? Did he honestly think everything about politics in Washington, D.C. was "going to be fun"? Stupak is no doubt under the gun and it is no doubt unpleasant, but maybe he should walk in Obama's shoes for a few days and then determine which position is more "funner".........
"Religious issue...I'm not religious and I support Pro Life. What an assinine comment."

So then abortion is probably a moral issue for you as you say you support Pro Life and at the same time are not religious. How do you feel about legislating morality? Is "right" in just some cases and not others? Or do you feel that the will of the majority should dictate what the moral rights of the minority should be?
Or could it be your "assinine" label is born from the fact that tsigili used the word "religious" in her/his comments instead of a word more to your liking - I mean given the fact that you are "not religious" and all...............
Good for Stupak standing strong!
Liberals are just so afraid that some day they won't be allowed to kill babies!
