Robert Gibbs Wears Canada Hockey Jersey, Makes Good on Olympic Bet

(Credit: CBS)

White House press secretary emerged for his daily briefing in a Canada hockey jersey today, making good on a bet with Dimitri Soudas, spokesman for Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, on the outcome of the Olympic gold medal hockey games.

Canada won the women's game 2-0 over the United States and the men's game in overtime, meaning that Gibbs had to wear a Canada jersey during one of his on-camera briefings.

Soudas, Gibbs told reporters, is "somewhere several hindered miles north laughing."

Gibbs wore the jersey for a few minutes while making jokes with reporters. He noted that the number on the jersey, 39, was in honor of U.S. goalkeeper Ryan Miller, the tournament MVP.

He then took the Canada jersey off -- revealing that he was wearing a team USA jersey underneath it. The move prompted applause from some of the reporters. Gibbs proceeded to answer questions from reporters while wearing the Team USA jersey, which was #10 in honor of 2010.

At one point, a reporter asked Gibbs to take the jersey off, so that when he showed up on the nightly news it would not have to be explained why he was wearing a hockey jersey in a story about health care. That would look a little strange, the reporter said.

Gibbs kept the jersey on.

"It can't be any stranger than any of the other stuff I see on the news," he quipped.

The reporter than shot back: "I'm just glad it was a hockey and not a wrestling bet."

(Gibbs did eventually remove the jersey, well into the briefing.)

Gibbs also announced that the White House has instructed the U.S. embassy to make arrangements to deliver one case of Molson Canadian beer and one case of Yuengling lager from Pottsville, Pennsylvania to Harper's office.

President Obama and the Canadian prime minister had wagered on the outcome of the men's hockey final.

"I'm sure Dimitri will take most of that home and consume it," joked Gibbs.

We like Canada-they come to us for medical care and PAY $$$$ for it. There "universal utopian" health care doesn't seem to be working.

HAHAHAHA...man that's so funny I nearly busted a rib laughing. At least I wouldn't have to spend $30,000 getting it fixed. It's free up here.

I just had to check this out. I reckoned there would be right-wingers who had lots of lame and nasty things to say about Gibbs wearing a Canadian hockey jersey. Guess what, I wasn't dissapointed. You people are so frickin predictable!

For all those "critical" of CBS covering this "story":
Perhaps you'd like to see CBS run a story about how the "wonderkid" Crosby is sucking his thumb over the goal that placed Gibbs in this position and outline the millions of U.S. dollars he's collecting playing hockey in Pittyburg?????? Lighten up and live alittle, sometimes humor helps, whining about what's wrong in your world all the time does not........ Canada taking home the hockey "Gold" is not the end of the world. Gibbs realizes this, why can't you?

My universal "utopian" healthcare gives me coverage I have never had to wait for in my 50 years on the planet. There is a reason we live longer than Americans. I'm so tired of reading conservative tripe. Ya.. I can go down south and pay for services. I just don't have to and no one in my family has ever felt the need to. Recently I was in a waiting room in a hospital and all the people I met wanted to talk about was how lucky we were that we had no anxiety about money and having a health services corp micromanage the health of our loved ones.

it would have been a better story if he won the bet. This is like fashion tips from a loser.

Boo! He lost the bet. He should have worn the Canadian Jersey for the entire press conference!

Otherwise, this and President Obama's beer bet with the Canadian Prime Minister are fantastic! It is great to see some good-natured, patriotic fun going on between two countries. I think that there should be more betting between the heads of state of Olympic athletes.

Pretty amazing we got a story breaking about Waxman openly claiming part of his goal for healthcare reform is to federally subsidize abortions with taxpayer money and this is the story we get from the White House? Shameful. Obama trying to take money out of our pockets to kill babies and CBS is spooning out some light fare about hockey.

I totally agree. There is also no story on eric holder withholding legal briefs to the senate, states witholding tax refund checks, or the out of control prius being a stunt. CBS news has definitely gone downhill. I don't know if it's due to their layoffs but their reporting is becoming truly pathetic.
