GOP Attempt to Force Eric Massa Probe Fails

(Credit: CBS)

House Republican Leader John Boehner Thursday offered a privileged resolution ordering the House ethics committee to investigate what members of the House leadership (as well as their staff) knew about allegations against former Democratic Rep. Eric Massa before the formal ethics inquiry into Massa's behavior began.

The resolution cited a statement by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer's office indicating Hoyer was made aware of allegations of misconduct in February and questions when and what House speaker Nancy Pelosi knew about them. It ordered the ethics committee to investigate and return a report by June 30th.

But Boehner's attempt was rebuffed Thursday afternoon when the House voted overwhelmingly to instead allow the ethics committee to determine its next move. The 402-1 vote means there may or may not be further inquiry into the Massa affair. The initial House ethics inquiry into Massa was formally ended Wednesday.

When members resign from the House, ethics inquiries are usually, though not always, closed -- Republicans have been quick to point out that the case involving former GOP Rep. Mark Foley was investigated even after Foley left office.

Republicans are eager to keep the spotlight on Massa and have raised questions about a cover-up on the part of the House leadership. Hoyer has said that when he learned of the allegations that Massa had sexually harassed a staffer, he demanded it quickly be referred to the ethics committee.

Pelosi's office reportedly heard concerns about Massa in October, though they involved not sexual harassment but claims that Massa had hired too many staff members, was living with several of them, and used foul language around them.

Heterosexual congressmen have been groping each other for decades. It is a super friendly way of greeting a pal. Since the Massa scandal a pat on the shoulder has replaced the cheerful grope. A new mental disorder has come to Washington, it is called Gropophobia.

Massa chose to resign. If it's only "inappropriate remarks", then just apologize and stay on as most others in such fixes do. The guy is known in the beltway as somebody with mental problems.

Today's HCR: aka the "no Massa" bill... ;^) -- saw a cool site; Balkingpoints ; incredible satellite view of earth

Who was the lone vote? Was it "Boner"? I hope he didn't cry, it might make his bronzer streak.

What needs to be investigated, is why it took Pelosi so long to start an investigation. Kind of funny that it came up right before a vote on the health care bill. One less vote Pelosi needs to pass it. Bet there was some kind of back room deal cut to end the investigation.

=====================

We need to get to the bottom of this groping thing. Re-regulating the financial sector that "groped" our economy should be secondary to exposing frat boy circle jerks. Every time Massa grabs a55, another job is off shored; there is a direct correlation; we just need an expensive investigation to expose this truth.

And there is no doubt we need to poor as much money in to this investigation as possible. Then have and investigation into the investigation. Everything else can be put on hold.

Don't you find it interesting that not one of Massa's friends, family, wife or children have tried to defend this idiot?

It's funny to watch the games people play when somebody misbehaves - republicans apparently want some payback because Foley was hounded after he left office, the democrats want the subject to be quickly dropped because Massa left office.... both sides act the same when they are the majority, air the other side's dirty laundry and sweep their own under the rug.

Since the vote was 402 to 1, I'd say a whole lot of republicans would like this joker to disappear also, it's only the boneheads like Boehner that are dumb enough to still try and make political points on an idiot like Massa.

Sounds like "Boners" probe of Massa would have been welcome by Massa, his history sure looks like he swings that way.

I'll say, scandals like Rangel'S is probably strangling the Dem's ability to raise money and win the credibility argument in November, I bet all these step-downs and Massa retirements are hurting the image, check out this story on Rangel's "step down"
