Report Warns of Growing Threat from Radicalized Americans

A new report from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee highlights a growing concern that radicalized Americans in Yemen and Somalia may present threats to the United States. The report says "as many as three dozen former criminals who converted to Islam in prison ... moved to Yemen, ostensibly to study Arabic.

But officials say "...some have disappeared and are suspected of having gone to al Qaeda training camps."

In addition, a smaller group of "...nearly 10 non-Yemeni Americans ... converted to Islam, became fundamentalists and married Yemeni women so they could remain in the country."

One official says these are the "blond-haired, blue-eyed types" al Qaeda seeks to recruit. But, the report says there is "no evidence that any of these Americans have undergone training."

Still, officials say "...they are on heightened alert because of the potential threat from extremists carrying American passports..."

The report also notes that officials fear American citizens are being recruited in Somalia for terrorist operations. It has been widely reported that a number of Americans have travelled there to train and fight with the terror group al Shabaab.

The report is being released in advance of a flurry of Capital Hill hearings tomorrow examining the failures that led to the attempted Christmas Day bombing by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian travelling with a US visa, trained with al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

by cbs_bull January 21, 2010 10:46 AM EST: Bush/Cheney did a good job for letting Bin Laden go free at Tora Bora and using the Iraq war as a distraction. They never focused on the war in Afghanistan. Now, the Al Qaeda finally figured out to find and use "blond-haired, blue-eyed types" al Qaeda members to carry out attacks similar to 9-11 (Wish this would be a wrong prediction.). Should many Americans still thank Bush/Cheney for letting us down?; Reply to this comment


by PDMasi January 20, 2010 2:59 PM EST: I see the T-baggers as radicalized Americans. They seem to have a mob mentality of lawlessness. I see the comments of some Republicans to be hard to comprehend. Especially the ones about not reaching across the isle and then continue to spew a whole litany of insults.
We all need to become proud Americans again and work on the things we all agree on. We all need jobs. We all love our children and want them to have a better life. We all want our jobs to stop being sent overseas by OUR supposedly American companies. We all want to stop the terrorists but until we honestly get to reason there are those terrorists it will never end. KILL, KILL, KILL, all Muslims is not the answer.
If I remember correctly it was the buSh administration that invaded a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. I don't think that blowing up people that had nothing to do with our problem is the answer but maybe the problem. A good hard look at our foreign policy might go along way.
I truly believe we have to look at the animals that are trying to blow up Americans as the worst criminals alive. THEY ARE NOT MILITARY personal and they should not be treated as such. They are not an organized army but crazed fanatics. When we get a bead on them they move from one country to another. We need to work with the law enforcement of those countries to aid in the transfer of info. The more innocent people we kill in foreign countries the more terrorists we create.
If we keep going down this path we will end up just like the Middle East of being in a state of war for 5 thousand years. There are no simple answers to the problems of the Middle East but to follow the same policies that they have been using for those 5 thousand years just make no sense at all.
For the posts that say Obama is week on the terrorists, were have you been? We have killed more terrorist cells and Al Quiada leaders with the drone attacks in the past year than buSh did in his entire 8 years. Please don't let your hate block your knowledge of the facts.; Reply to this comment

Instead they are training to be more dangerous than suicide bombers. Let's not concentrate on the past but prepare for new dangers.; Reply to this comment

by Archie_Clement January 19, 2010 8:02 PM EST: These people are not Americans. They are foreigners, mostly from Islamic countries, who hold an American passport. Americans don't go to Pakistan to fight America. They would be traitors, not Americans. Nor do they shoot up soldiers in Ft. Hood. That jihadist is also a traitor who happened to hold a US passport. I think it is great that those five morons were arrested in Pakistan. They can learn about the wonders of an Islamic Republic first hand in prison.; Reply to this comment

They are more concerned with the "rights" of terrorist moles than national security.

Do you honestly believe the government will use this information only to "protect" you, and never to control you? Beware. The day may come when you view your own government as a much bigger threat than these Muslim "terrorists".

Considering the amount of gun related deaths each year in the US (33,000 in 2007 alone, 30,000 more than the twin towers), I would say that yes, we are growing our own homegrown terrorists.

So many ,long term US prisoners are just drug addicts-they get very vengeful at their treatment-it was a stupid thing to put them into prisons in the first place-this is just one of many problems that will surface...

Drug addicts aren't something you want in your neighborhood. They're contagious and they spread disease. There's no "just" about it - anyone who chooses that life, is choosing to hand in their status as a human being for the chance to be a drooling wild animal.
