Obama Picks Crony As U.K. Ambassador

The Obama administration may well end cronyism, as promised. It may well usher in a long-called for change in the way America's senior representatives in foreign countries are chosen. But it hasn't yet.

According to Britain's newspapers, Mr. Obama has picked former Citigroup vice-president and Democratic uber-fundraiser Louis Susman as the next Ambassador to the United Kingdom. (Susman, then a member of the St. Louis Cardinals executive board, is seen below in a 1985 file photo holding up the National League Championship trophy.)

(AP Photo )

Susman is a lawyer and investment banker by trade who has no real diplomatic experience. He is, instead, a member of the elite inner circle of Chicago power-brokers who helped propel Mr. Obama into office. He's been nicknamed the Vacuum Cleaner for his ability to suck up donations for Democratic politicians.

Now, is that so bad? The ambassadorship to the U.K. has long-been one of those plum political appointments that carries a grand title (United States Ambassador to the Royal Court of St. James), an incredibly posh lifestyle, but very little political responsibility.

George W. Bush first placed a Texas billionaire and then a California billionaire in Winfield House — the ambassador's official residence in the heart of central London, located adjacent to the picturesque Regent's Park. Neither of them had real diplomatic credentials, either.

But this time, the Brits are a bit miffed. The naming of another ambassador who, in the words of The Guardian, is a political appointee likely "more interested in country walks than Iraq or nuclear non-proliferation," may well be viewed by many in Britain's halls of power as a snub.

If it wasn't for Mr. Obama's campaign promises to end cronyism, and published calls from retired life-long diplomats for the new President to start a trend of choosing actual diplomats as ambassadors, then the choice of Susman may have been largely overlooked.

In an April 8 article, the Washington Post's Al Kamen warned that, despite having indicated a will to limit the number "vanity" or "cash-only" ambassadors, the buzz was that the Obama administration was looking to keep the practice going. According to the article, about 30 percent of the 160 or so envoy positions are usually political picks, while the rest go to career diplomats.

However, the latest chapter in the much trumpeted "special relationship" between the U.S. and the U.K. has been given a rocky start, with an awkward first meeting of Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Mr. Obama in Washington following a leaked remark by a British diplomat describing the American leader as "aloof".

The bust of Winston Churchill was removed from pride of place in the White House, and several small token gifts from the American administration to Britain's leaders have been deemed… well, a bit too small.

Washington will inevitably tout Susman as the perfect American to purvey our country's interests in Britain, and London's elite will inevitably deny (on the record, at least) even the slightest feelings of resentment over his appointment.

Meanwhile, as a very good satirical article on Anorak.com put it, "Soon Susman will be living in a big house by London's Regent's Park, learning all about diplomacy as he counts the geese…"

To accuse Obama of Chronyism, which is the practice of favoring one's close friends, esp. in political appointments, is an affront to his character and judgement. It's like accusing him of not be the least bit bipartisan in his approach to choosing people within the Republican Party to help him fix the mess that Bush & Cheney's Administration created out of rash decisions, neglect, poor judgment, poor planning, and their unilateral approach after 9-11.

Next, some Republican activists will accuse Obama of failing to have Great Britain help more in the "war on terror" by appointing some "Chrony" other than Susman. Would the majority of Brits rather have George Bush Jr or Dick Cheney as a diplomat to from America to Great Britain??

What an absurdity that would turn out to be! They'd probably insist Great Britain assume a unilateral approach in all of its foreign affairs.

I'm very happy I didn't vote for Obama, that way I don't have to try and defend him with stupid statements.

Stop it Obama, stop evading your responsibility. The buck stops at YOUR desk now. Take the lead and quit whining about the last administration. Quit breaking every darn promise you made to get elected.

So, you are telling us that anybody that helps you get elected should be ignored til you need them again. Cronyism and friendship mean the same thing people. The only difference is that if its your opponents friends they are only called 'Cronys' out of spite and childish hatred.

This apointment is of absolutely no consequence whatsoever unless you're just looking for something to whine about. It's a ceremonial position so I don't care who he appoints to it. In stark contrast, Bush filled the Federal government with unqualified, incompetent, often convicted felon cronies who's only qualification was unflinching loyalty to him and his failed policies. The results have been disasterous.

Again, Obama and his choices already stand head and shoulders above the previous administration.

Great - I just love being lied to by my own party and people I voted for. I am just appalled. I don't give a rats rump about Bush anymore, he is gone now. What I do give a rats rump about is what is happening right now. I am starting to get really really tired about my President not stepping up to the plate and not keeping his campaign promises. In fact, I have had it up to my eyeballs.

"The Obama administration may well end cronyism, as promised. It may well usher in a long-called for change in the way America's senior representatives in foreign countries are chosen. But it hasn't yet. "

The anthem for Obama fans. He may do it. Not today, not tomorrow, not yet, but he may. He may chase the lobbyists out of Washington (to cushy embassys in Europe), he may close Gitmo (but who really wants that), he may pull us out of Iraq right away (if by right away you mean 2055), he may fix health care, he may fix the economy; just keep giving him time and trillions. It is funny how libs sound with Obama like many cons felt with Bush. We may find ourselves sharing beers, comisserating together at a corner bar in 2012. But who will be able to afford a beer in 2012? Here's to the American people, bought and sold for at least the last sixty years.

I couldn't stop laughing at the libs and obamas apologist over their naivite about the messiah.
barrack is and never will be good for America. His vision is out of touch with reality.

this is absurd. it seems everyone forgets that the ambassadorship to england was always given as a reward to wealthy contributors. name me some who weren't? democrats and republican alike.

pile on you republican leadership and point your slimy fingers at another person who's doing the very same things you've done. you have so little else to tout....as much real damage as you've done to this country. appointing a contributor is standard proceedure for ambassadorships....and as anotehr person said in this thread----are they qualified? or not?

the criticisms of bush's appointments are very well illustrated by the hightowers books. it seems nobody even squealed on bit over them, but a wealthy contributors gets rewarded with an ambassadorship to the throne of england and a big deal is made of it.

i don't think the republicans want to make much of this one----they'd be opening up something that may backfire on them.....when their party has done the very same thing.
