Stranded Environmental Activists Find Salvation Aboard Oil Tanker

If nothing else, Mother Nature has a sense of irony.

Two British environmental activists, whose carbon-neutral voyage to Greenland's polar ice cap resulted in a storm-induced mayday call, were rescued by (wait for it) … an oil tanker.

The activists, Raoul Surcouf and Richard Spink, were two weeks into their adventure aboard the Fleur, a 40-foot yacht outfitted with solar panels and a wind turbine, . Thousands of schoolchildren had planned to follow the green expedition online.

But the weather was not cooperative. The ship encountered hurricane-force winds and waves battered the vessel, strong enough to destroy the solar panels and the ship's generator. The yacht capsized a total of three times before the crew was forced to issue a distress call to the coast guard and hope for rescue.

"The decision was made that the risk to our personal safety was too great to continue," Spink said in a statement.

Those hopes were realized in the form of the 113,000-ton tanker Overseas Yellowstone, carrying 680,000 barrels of oil. The ship picked up the Fleur's crew about 400 miles off the Irish coast.

Irony aside, the crew praised the tanker's Captain Ferro and his men for being "outstanding in the execution of the rescue."

"They are extremely relieved to just be alive," said Jess Tombs, a spokeswoman for the expedition, told the Guardian.

The Fleur's crew is scheduled to arrive in Maine later in the week.

That is funny. If these loonies had any morals they should have refused rescue by an oil tanker. The oil tanker may have had to make a detour to pick the morons up. I bet they flew home from New York as well. How many carbon-offsetting trees are required for this adventure? Did they tow the yacht as well? Or is that now polluting the ocean floor?

The mountains around here lost the glacial ice in 1983, the last three years they have regained some of the glacial ice and seems to gain more snow earlier as well, and it stays on longer, does that mean we still have GW?

And of all the posts on here about how global warming is BS, what if you all are wrong? You think your kids won't be living on a greatly dimished planet or something? And what do you gain from denying the obvious? I can understand Exxon etc. wanting to continue to make record profits, but what do you folks gain from trash talking what is obvious to most people on the planet? Your kids will watch the polar bear die off. Your kids will watch ice caps on mountains around the world - many here in the US - simply disapear. Your kids will have to fight for fresh water. It's baffling to me that normal people think it is somehow "real american" to prop up Exxon and their likes in spite of overwhelming evidence and drastic changes before our eyes. It's even more baffling because big oil and coal would sell you mothers if it meant a buck for them. Very odd.

Global Warming and Global Cooling has always been with us. Just look at the Scientific record..... There is plenty of evidence that support this subject.

So, if we go all out to try and stop Global Warming all we are going to do is slow it down for some short time. A few years at most.
