Hamas: "We Are Not Begging For Dialogue"

Palestinian reconciliation was dealt a new blow Sunday when Hamas rejected Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' condition that the militant group should first recognize the supremacy of the PLO before they hold new talks.

In a speech at a Palestinian hospital in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, Abbas lashed out at the Islamist movement for its conduct during the three-week Gaza war, accusing the group of "irresponsible behavior" and of carrying out "an agenda which is not Palestinian."

"Now we say ... no dialogue with those who reject the Palestine Liberation Organization," Abbas told a news conference. "They must admit without equivocation or ambiguity that the organization is the sole and only representative of the Palestinian people.

"Then there will be dialogue," he added.

In Syria, exiled Hamas officials were quick to answer back.

"We want to tell Abbas that we are not begging for dialogue and we are not running after it," senior Hamas leader Mohammed Nazal told CBS News in Damascus.

The Islamic faction has ruled Gaza since seizing power there after elections in June 2007.

"Anyway, we were not surprised to hear Abbas's inflammatory tone and void statements which contained false accusations, as that reflects his state of bewilderment and confusion after the great victory of Hamas and other resistance groups against Israel," Nazal said.

"Abbas and his team were waiting to return to Gaza on the Israeli tanks after most of them ran away in their underwear to Ramallah and Cairo," he added.

The remarks come as Palestinians from both sides were gathering in Cairo for talks on Monday aimed at bolstering a truce in Gaza.

Egypt has been mediating a truce after Hamas and Israel announced ceasefires on January 18, ending the devastating 22-day offensive that killed more than 1,330 Palestinians — half of them women and children — and wounded 5,000 others.

Thirteen Israelis were killed during the same period.

Hamas leader Khaled Mishaal (visiting Tehran to thank the Iranian government for its support during the offensive) has advocated a new umbrella body to represent the diaspora of Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and beyond, calling for "a new, national authority."

The two sides agree in principle on the idea of a national unity government for the Palestinian Authority, but they disagree on whether Abbas still has a mandate to govern, and on whether armed struggle is still a legitimate strategy for dealing with Israel.

Hamas had 6 Palestinian Christian candidates run for office for Hamas in the 2006 elections.
There are several churches and a small Christian community in Gaza. I''''m a Palestinian Christian from the West Bank and live in a village that is half Christian and half Muslim.
We are mainly of the Greek Orhtodox and Anglical Church persuation.
Our village was founded sometime around 400AD and has flourished under Muslim and Arabic rule.
The main problem today is the nearby Jewish settlement taken land away from us and the Jewish settlers coming to our village to uproot trees or harass people.
But, hey, Hammy Boy, thank you so much for your concern.
I mean, what would the world be without ignorant ba.stard.s like you, right?

If Israel wanted peace they would quit stealing from others and starving and murdering their children.

Israel Zio-Nazi''''s idea of peace is for the Palestinians to sit quietly by for another 60 years of Israel:

1) running people out of their homes and villages

2) stealing their property

3) walling them into refugee concentration camps

4) harassing them at hundreds of checkpoints so they can''''t even go to the bathroom without Israel''''s permission

5) diverting their drinking water so illegal jewish settlers can have lush green lawns in the desert

6) blockading their food fuel and medicine so their children eat like kids in sub-sahara africa

7) labeling them %u2018terrorists%u2019 if they resist

8) bombing them

9) murdering their children

10) and then blaming them for all the bad things that have happened to them

If Israel wanted peace they would quit stealing from others and starving and murdering their children.

well, you could start by inviting a muslim group to come over, then you could let them convert a few born-again christians (like ex-pres. bushit) in Texas. then you''''d get an invitation to do th same in Gaza! Shalom.

How do I get into GAZA ? I wanted to take my church group there, and try to teach Christian values, and convert as many people to the words of peace. I am sure these nice peace loving people would welcome us.

What the Palestinians do need is a new national party, as Hamas suggested, to negotiate from a united LEGAL front and to retire the baggage associated with both parties.
Hamas were democratically elected in Gaza and have the authority to talk.
Abbas'' PLO term of office ran out January 9th. Without an election, he is acting illegally and cannot sign any legal agreements for anyone.
So it is no surprise he is blackmailing (just what Israel and the US want).
It will be interesting to see how Palestinians in Ramallah vote if they ever get a chance.
There have always been many Christians living in harmony with Muslims and peaceful Jews in this region.
Israel has always targeted Christians and prevented them from practicing their faith. There are incidents and blockades every major Christian holiday.

Hamas relies to much on Iran and that is why Iran must be dealt with before they try to wipe Israel off the map! That would be an injustice to a race of people
