Syria Congratulates Hamas On Gaza "Victory"

Senior Hamas leader Khaled Mishaal was congratulated on Saturday by Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, who praised Hamas for their "legendary victory" following the Israelis' 22-day aggression against Gaza.

Assad also vowed that his country would always back resistance to Israel until the liberation of Palestine.

Assad's remark came during an hour-long meeting with a Hamas delegation, the kick-off of a regional tour meant to thank countries that stood beside the Islamic movement.

"Assad congratulated the Palestinian people and the heroic resistance, on top of which Hamas, for the legendary victory and steadfastness that drove out the Zionest enemy from the Strip," a Damascus-based Hamas source told CBS News.

"The Syrian leader underlined that it was the duty of his country to support the resistance and that it would keep doing so until achieving the Palestinian national goals: expelling the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital," he quoted Assad as telling Mishaal.

The Hamas leader voiced his gratitude to Syria's statements, and considered Damascus a "partner in the victory."

A Syrian official source quoted Assad as telling the delegation that the "defeat of Israel was due to the adherence to the Palestinian rights." He refused to give more details.

The Palestinian faction received a huge political boost a week ago when its leaders attended the top-level gathering of the so-called "hardline" Arab countries (as well as Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is viscerally hostile to Israel) for the first time.

Mishaal, along with the leaders of Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (which were also fighting Israel in Gaza), flew to Doha from Damascus on the Emir of Qatar's private plane.

Israel accuses Syria and Iran of supporting and arming Hamas, an accusation they deny.

Israel and Hamas have observed their own cease-fires since last Sunday when Israel ended Operation Cast Lead, leaving a trail of devastation and 1,330 Palestinians dead, half of them children and women.

Egypt is trying to secure a durable cease-fire and the reopening of border crossings, followed by Palestinian reconciliation talks.

Hamas threatened to resume fighting if Israel does not reopen the crossings, and Israel warned it would strike again if Hamas is allowed to rearm.

U.S. President Barack Obama has called on Israel and Hamas to take steps aimed at ensuring that the cease-fire in place in Gaza will endure, and said he would aggressively seek a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians, while also always defending Israel's "right to defend itself."

While European nations and, of course, the United States, refuse to talk to Hamas until it recognizes Israel, renounces violence and accepts interim peace deals signed by the Palestine Liberation Organization, many observers say the group should be engaged in any political process, especially after the Gaza war.

Victory!? What victory? My dear president of Syria, not victory. The shroud of the Middle-Eastern war has fallen, yet again. Continue, the latest fighting will.

They''re still around, in power, and the people back them more than ever.

The Plaestinians are enraged that their loved ones are murdered.

Israel is being considered for war crimes.

THAT victory.

The only victory for Hamas and his Islamic terrorists would be all of the martyrs they made out of the civilians they hid behind. According to their insane terroristic beliefs those are the biggest victory of all. Sick warped minds.

Well, Syria had the opportunity to be on the right side of history. Better to have chosen peace than support terrorism. Wonder how Syria would like Hamas firing rockets into Syria. Course, this could happen; totally unpredictable.

It is unfortunate that so many politicians and political groups find the "politics of fear" to be an easy way to take and maintain power.

Why peace, if peace means an end to your power?

Anwar Sadat said, "Syria is ready to fight Isreal right down to the last Egyption."

He as president of Egypt knew from experience that Syria uses other for their goals and cares not how many die.

Hamas, beware of Syria. They will fund you and praise you till the last one of you dies and then they will look for other fools they can hide behind and manipulate from afar.

You know, just like you do with your suicide bombers.

I believe in the right to return too, but it MUST be contingent upon the security of Israel from further attacks. There are elements within the Palestinian territories and other Arab lands that will settle for nothing short of the total elimination of every Jew in the Middle East.

Until this is resolved, the right to return must be shelved. Israel should pull back to pre-1967 borders, but ONLY once their homeland is safe and secure from ALL further attacks.

Basically, Israel decided taking large chunks of the West Bank (Golan Heights as I recall) would make it easier for Israeli defense forces.

That of course does not justify it.

Also Israel was paying to build settlements on Palestinian land, even though there was nobody moving there. Essentially planting their flag because they coveted that land.

Might does not make right. Just because Israel CAN bully Palestinians, does not mean it SHOULD.
Palestinians can''t counter Israel''s military, so they counter with terrorism.

Personally, I prefer mutual fairness.

Ask yourself if another country, militarily superior were to do the same to you... wouldn''t you resist by all means possible?

I think yes, especially if your loved ones are killed too.

"This is a ''''catch 22''''. Israel keeps taking land that is being used to launch rockets...thus Hamas launches more rockets, thus Israel takes the land they launch from... It has to stop somewhere...either Hamas stops with the rockets, or eventually Israel will own Gaza."

I disagree with that assertion. The land Israel took was not being used to launch rockets, it was being used to make settlements and to grow food. The Palestinians weren''t too keen on that.

The "Right of Return" of Palestinian lands is one of the thornier issues regarding peace between them. Google it for info
