After toddler is left to die, China disquieted
Yueyue, a 2-year-old, moments before she is hit by a truck in Foshan City in China.
/ Chinasmack.com via YoukuThe video from Foshan City of Guangdong Province in China is unequivocal: A two-year-old is seen lying in a pool of blood on a market street having just been hit by a truck, which sped away after slowly running over her with its back wheels too, after which more than a dozen people walk around the toddler, none offering help.
The child, named Yue Yue, survived the accident, after a 56-year-old rag collector finally came to her rescue and dragged her out of the road, but not before a second truck hit the girl, according to China Daily. She is now, however, in rough shape - "brain dead," doctors say - and is unlikely to survive.
By itself, the video (WARNING: Graphic violence) has sparked worldwide news reports, and within China it has led to a serious discussion about public values. The state-run news agency, Xinhua, writes: "High moral standards were once triumphed as national pride in China where individuals known for selflessly helping others were adored by the public. But in recent years, the perception of a decline of morals has become a hot topic as profit and materialism are perceived to be affecting society's values. On Sept. 2, an 88-year-old man in central China collapsed, his face striking the pavement. Yet, no one came to his aid, and he ended up choking to death on the blood from his nose."
According to many internet commentators, the relatively new tendency in China to ignore those in desperate need can be blamed on the "Nanjing judge."
Chinese news aggregator Chinasmack.com writes that phrase refers to "the 2006 case of a man named Peng Yu who helped a woman to the hospital after she had fallen only to have the old woman accuse him of knocking her down. The Nanjing judge in that case ultimately ruled that common sense dictated that only the person who hit her would take her to the hospital."
Several reports claim police have apprehended both drivers that ran over the girl and fled the scene. However, public anger seems to be mostly directed at the many who did nothing when helping was the only right moral call.

RE:Joshua Norma ":graphic" video of death of chinese Girl In china gets hit by truck
I am extremely disappointed with the attacched link...my 11 year old son pulled this video up and was mortified by what he saw. he was researching Mr Normans, story of Ghadaffi and became upset about this video...This was not a good exercise of caution by Mr. Norman. Our exercise under the fist ammendment comes with an air of caution and above all prudence...this video contains no means to verify that persons viewing it are over the age of 18. it merely state that it is graphic. I would like your editor to remove the video...the story is not even about the death of the child its about china in general and some good samaritan law. this piece should be about the short existence and the pain of the family...a human piece not a horror piece...if this was a movie editorial it would be rated R.....my phone number is attached...i dont think the CBS executive board would approve of this contractor posting this video and i hope it gets removed soon..the story is fine but the graphic image of the willful disregard of hman life is like showing the rapes of woamn in darfur on your website....please correct this at your earliest convenience...thank you.

sorry for the capitals...i am outraged.....this reporter should be fired..........may god bless our people
If our Corporate Media can't get this story correct you can't trust them on ANY overseas report.
I've lived in either Taiwan or China for 15 years, not counting vacations back home to USA. This kind of accident happens a hundred times a day (victims could be of any age.) If our Corporate Media doesn't know this they are worthless! I depose I have seen over 1000 accidents with many like this.
So is the atmosphere here, in the US, with people advocating cutting off SS, SSI and SSDI, Medicare and Foodstamps to the poor, disabled and retired. That is as lacking in humanity as what happened to this little girl.
I was saddened but not surprised to read that she passed away from her injuries in hospital.
China, what is wrong with you?!
I'm glad the drivers were arrested, but I think the people who just walked by should be in prison, as well. And that idiot judge who declared that only the person who committed a crime would be the one to take the victim to the hospital is an ass. Haven't people in China ever heard of good samaritans? Or at least of the concept of compassion? Of course people who take injured strangers to hospitals can be good people...to rule that they are the criminals is asinine.
Chinese ethics, from what I've seen and read here, are so f****d up.
MY HEART GOES OUT TO HER PARENTS FOR YOUR PRECIOUS 2YR OLD DAUGHTER, GOD IS WITH YOU DURING THIS TIME.
NOBODY DESERVES THIS KIND OF TREATMENT. I SURELY HOPE THAT THEY TRACK DOWN BOTH TRUCK DRIVERS AND HAVE THEM SERVE THE REST OF THEIR LIFES IN PRISON.
THIS IS INHUMANE AND AGAIN MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE PARENTS OF THIS PRECIOUS LITTLE GIRL. THIS WILL STAY WITH ME FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE ON HOW YOU PEOPLE COULD JUST PASS BY AND NOT DO A THING.
THE PRESIDENT ON THE UNITED STATES, SHOULD BE INFORMED ABOUT THIS AND MAKE SURE THAT THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN IN ANY COUNTRY.
Wait, what's this????
