A video of a brutally beaten Syrian boy has reportedly stirred protesters to keep up their weeks-long fight against strongman Bashar al-Assad despite the regime's continued acts of violence against its own people.

The body of 13-year-old Hamza Ali al-Khateeb was returned to his family a month after his April 29 arrest during a protest in a village in southern Syria, The New York Times reported in its print editions Tuesday:

"Video posted online shows his battered, purple face. His skin is scrawled with cuts, gashes, deep burns and bullet wounds that would probably have injured but not killed. His jaw and kneecaps are shattered, according to an unidentified narrator, and his penis chopped off."

"People are very upset about the death of the young boy Hamza," one protest organizer told the Times on the condition of anonymity. "He was just a child. It is a crime, a serious crime."

The Times reports that al-Khateeb's death has galvanized protesters across the country with some carrying signs that read "We are all Hamza al-Khateeb" and "Did Hamza scare you that much?"

Al-Assad's military continued its assaults against dissidents Tuesday. Protest organizers told The Associated Press that the military used artillery and heavy machine guns during an offensive in Rastan, killing at least one man.

This story is beyond sad. The body of this young boy turns my stomach. What kind of human can do this to a kid? That whole area is full of crazies and I can't even say it is religious. They are just evil. The big question, what can be done about it. The people that did this to this little fella will never be identified, let alone caught. I do like the weapons drop idea. Arm the Syrian people and let them take out this government before more children are used as messages.

I can't nelieve there are only 26 comments speaking out about this atrocity.

I just heard on CNN that this child is not the first literally tortured until he died.

Assad's forces have used this technique before to terrorize the Syrian people.

Don't believe for one minute Assad did not know this was happening.

This evil, savage murderous butcher continues to use machine guns and heavy artillery against his own people and tortures and slaughters children to stay in power.

I suggest air drops of weapoms and ammunition to the citizens of Syria; enough to let them give Assad and his butchers a taste of their own medicine.

Some people need killing, and Assad and his forces are at the top of the list.

If they continue to use medieval tactics against the Syrian people. they should receive medieval justice.

When they are all dead, put their heads on pikes in front of Assad's house and give notice to anyone who wants to try these same tactics that such atrocities will no longer be tolerated.

Just watched this on CBS. It was so watered down- if you only watch the t.v. news you fail to see the full story. Disappointed with that; people need to know how violently evil these inhuman radicals are.
'Poor child.

How sad.
Children should never have to live with atrocities of any kind. They should be flying kites, looking at the clouds, playing with dolls or trucks, water bubbles, marbles, and all the things that children play with.
Ideally, children should not have to see murder and mayhem and certainly not suffer at the hands of ignorant savages.
The Arab world has many cultures and customs so diametrically opposed to ours, we should just leave them alone and let them kill each other. Yet, children will also, unfortunately, suffer.
So sad.
And so it goes.....

I agree, stop feeding, support of all foreign nations. They will die off because they choose not to get out of the "dark ages".I hope the young will never stop the fight for freedom, education, & the basic rights women, children & men are entitled to. The brainwashing of cult religions will be the death of all if not stopped.

who really beat the boy? what evidence is there? could the boy have been beaten to be used as an example of government brutality but it went wrong and the boy was killed by organized protestors? just saying that these days one can't believe every story, every video coming out of the middle east. many lie to get other nations to intervene. remember the iraqi chemist who lied about wmds, he was credible, and recently stated he lied because he wanted saddam removed. or how about the story that iraqi troops were bayoneting children in hospitals when they invaded kuwait, also a lie by those wanting other nation states to intervene. not buying any of these stories, videos, whatever, out of the middle east. they lie.

Did you see the video? Did you the articles on the Al-Jazeera site or the Manchester Guardian or the Daily Mail? The United States is not the only country broadcasting this story. When a government will "show" its citizens what it will do to THEIR CHILDREN if they don't accept the evils thrust upon them, that is major news. Tianammen Square? Heard of that? Governments do horrible things, and we should know about it. God bless the young boy and I hope he passed out and was not conscious during most of the torture.

ppaulville, is there no atroscity in this world that people like you can NOT try to twist into your right-wing, biggoted Obama bashing?? Quick question, you're always the first to comment on how we need to GET OUT of Lybia, even though we don't have a single pair of boots on the ground there right? Hope your corporate masters are at least paying your patsy behind.

Our troubles in Libya began when Obama failed to act in a timely fashion. His indecisiveness hurt many civilians there.
