Obama gets unusual boost from U.N.

President Barack Obama has objected to a Palestinian bid for a vote on a United Nations resolution to create a Palestinian state, which would require a two-thirds majority to pass. "Symbolic actions to isolate Israel at the United Nations in September won't create an independent state," Mr. Obama said May 19.

Now the leader of the General Assembly says such a vote should not happen until the initiative has first passed through the U.N. Security Council - where the United States has a veto.

The President of the General Assembly, Joseph Deiss of Switzerland, made clear at a press conference at U.N. headquarters in New York Friday that the larger General Assembly could not vote on Palestinian statehood without a recommendation first by the 15-nation Security Council, reports CBS News foreign affairs analyst Pamela Falk.

"So the General Assembly cannot take the initiative, but we are ready to do our work as soon as a recommendation of the Security Council would be addressed," Deiss said.

Palestinian representatives at the U.N. have said they will have more than the required two-thirds majority to pass in the General Assembly. However, under the U.N. Charter, a membership bid has to go to the Security Council first.

Netanyahu aims to prevent U.N. vote on Palestine

Confirming earlier comments that the Palestinian leadership at the U.N. might wait to see if negotiations were back on track before moving forward on a bid for membership, President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday, attending a Doha meeting of Arab states, said that Palestinians are not seeking to isolate Israel on the international stage, but will pursue their unilateral drive for U.N. recognition of statehood unless peace talks resume, Reuters reported.

The incoming leadership of the U.N. General Assembly and Security Council may have a different interpretation of the steps that Palestine may take in order to make their point about growing support for membership.

The Swiss President of the General Assembly turns the podium in September to Qatar's U.N. Ambassador Nasr Abdulaziz al-Nasser, after an election in June, and the Security Council will be chaired by Lebanon's Permanent Representative, a change that could lead the way to votes on more symbolic moves by the Palestinian leadership. Because the U.N. Charter is silent on the issue of "observer" entities, there have been some rumblings that Palestine would seek a vote to change its status from observer entity to observer state.

Supporters of Palestinian state could circumvent U.S. veto at U.N.

President Obama has been clear on the U.S. position. In his Middle East speech last week, he said, "Symbolic actions to isolate Israel at the United Nations in September won't create an independent state."

But the White House's efforts to get stalled peace talks back on track will be difficult. Middle East special envoy George Mitchell left the administration's team recently. And, during Mr. Obama's Europe trip, his effort to persuade U.S. allies - including British Prime Minister David Cameron - not to support the Palestinian efforts for statehood were inconclusive.

We Americans speak of freedoms, tolerance, and diversity, yet our government makes the Zionist occupation possible against our will, with our tax money, and making us accomplices in constant murders that the Zionist regime is committing including murders of our own American citizens (search on youtube for "Rachel Corrie" video of Zionist bulldozer crushing her to death). I am ashamed as an American that our politicians are controlled by the Zionist regime to such a terrifying extent. Tens of senators, state representatives, and ambassadors to foreign countries are Jewish. While I recognize that many are honest and against the Zionist regime, I am concerned about the fair representation of our will at the highest levels of our government. Just look on Wikipedia for "List of Jewish American politicians," and visit prince.org/msg/105/271100 to discover that all five Federal Reserve chairmen/chairwomen are Jewish, and almost all (9 out of 12) regional Fed chairmen/chairwomen are also Jewish. I never like to generalize, but Jews comprise only 2% of our population and they have so much power in the government and almost absolute power over our money supply and economic polices. I am just not comfortable that all Americans are being represented properly especially not on the Palestine occupation issue that I know most people do not support judging by the comments against the Zionist regime I hear everywhere. Urge your state representatives and senators to immediately stop any remaining support for the Zionist regime. Much of the support already stopped because of the increasing pressure on this issue, but we Americans need to completely distance ourselves from this oppressive regime and stop being accomplices in its murders! The world is also reacting. Who would want to be remembered in history as an accomplice to ruthless occupation? Many countries, companies, and countless moral individuals have already successfully implemented no relations with the Zionist government and others are implementing the same policy as we speak. Not travel there, not buy anything from it, not trade with it, not communicate with it, etc. Also do the same with any country that supports it because the Zionist government only survives because of its external supporters

Ambroise555 says:
Why would Zionists want to discuss any peace agreement with the Palestinians when they have overwhelming military supremacy, seemingly ultimate power, and apparently bright future? Because the future is completely opposite and Zionists know it.

1. All military powers in history with no exception ultimately came crashing down. Someone stronger always comes, and it does not take a rocket scientist to see (just look around you) this coming and not ending well for the current military power in Palestine. Forward-seeing Jewish people under the Zionist regime already started packing up and leaving for Australia, South America, and the U.S. before this occurs.

2. It is obvious that the Zionist regime survives mainly because of its external allies who so far provided it with money, weapons, political support, access to markets, etc. After countless U.N. human rights violations, killing of its allies' citizens (search on youtube for American "Rachel Corrie" video of Zionist bulldozer crushing her to death), forging of its allies' passports in acts of murder, etc. its former allies are increasingly turning against the Zionist regime. Who would want to be remembered in history as an accomplice in international murders and especially of their own citizens.

3. Not only that the list of remaining supporters is growing thinner, but an international coalition is formed and growing larger of countries that are cutting all economic and diplomatic relations with the Zionist regime.

4. No country ever survived a complete isolation from its neighbors. No person of the area currently under Zionist occupation can obtain any type of visa from any of the surrounding countries for any reason - a complete land lock.

5. Well attended speeches take place almost weekly at colleges and universities across the U.S. and the world condemning the Zionist regime, their remaining supporters, and companies that do any business there. These speeches are often lead by moral Jewish people, church leaders, business people, etc., in addition to traditional peace activists.

6. The West where most of the traditional supporters of the Zionist regime are located is loosing global influence. China, the Middle East, South East Asia, Russia, South America, etc. are emerging as new pockets of economic and political power where the Zionist regime has angered most of the population.

7. Not only that the West is declining, but Zionists are loosing political control in the declining West. Diversity is bringing minority groups into politics, groups that are actively opposing the Zionist regime.
In conclusion, the Zionist regime is negotiating now because its future is changing for much worse. It knows that it temporarily exists now only through the force of its arms and this will be short-lived. It knows that it is at its peak and a downturn has come. It is a mistake to negotiate with the Zionist regime at the present time. But, if you have to negotiate, do not accept anything less than a single region in question (single state) where all who live there are equal. Any other "solution" would just reward the Zionist regime at the time of its demise. If the Zionist regime wants true piece, let's not make it dependent on Zionist political and land acquisition goals, but on democratic vote for all who live there and making everyone equal (something we Americans cherish so passionately).

The only solution for a lasting peace is absolute democratic process (that we Americans cherish so passionately) for the entire territory in question, otherwise, the peace will not last. All people who lived there without regard to religion, race, etc. should vote on how they would like their one country to be run. I favor one state solution because two states would only attempt to "legalize" Zionist occupation that will be remembered in history until it is corrected by future large scale conflicts, so no lasting peace will result.
The only issue with the fair democratic process is what to do with all manipulated Jewish people who the Zionist regime imported for decades to increase the Jewish population from around 100,000 to over 5 Million since the start of the occupation. This is obviously an attempt to unjustly manipulate any future democratic process by forcefully increasing the occupier's population at the expense of others. Any compromise other than the absolute fair democratic process with no manipulated population will be temporary with terrible conflicts looming to correct it in the future.
The truth is that the Zionist regime will not accept any democratic process even if the manipulated Jewish population is included because it cannot exist as a democratic country as Zionists will be outvoted by all others who live there (Zionists were in an infinite minority before the occupation). The Zionist regime can only temporarily exist through the force of its arms as a one people country where only select ones can vote and where different laws apply to different people.
The world must stand up against the Zionist regime by cutting all diplomatic and economic relations with it. Many countries have already stopped all relations with the Zionist regime and others are in the process of doing the same. We Americans need to completely distance ourselves from this oppressive regime through urging our state representatives and senators to do what the rest of the world is doing

Let's punt to Canada!

The headlines on many sites reads, Harper either pulls, stops, sticks up for, etc...that 67 borders language not be in the G8 statement.

Which is very interesting to me because he endorsed the president's speech in its entirety and it includes the borders with land swaps? The G8 statement says;

"The framework for these negotiations is well known. We urge both parties to return to substantive talks with a view to concluding a framework agreement on all final status issues. "To that effect, we express our strong support for the vision of Israeli-Palestinian peace outlined by President Obama on May 19, 2011."

PM Harper supports President Obama's speech in its entirety the G8 supports his speech as the basis to move forward to a new peace process. It appears to me that all this was put on to give Mr. Netanyahu the illusion that he won.

If Mr. Netanyahu government does not think we support them lets punt the problem to Canada and let them represent Israel at the UN. We can remain neutral on the Security Council and abstain on any vote for Palestinian statehood. Neither side can blame us and let the chips fall where it will.

I guess there may be one small problem Canada does not have a seat on the UN Security Council.

Considering all the criminals ,rapist, and thieves there are at the UN I suppose it is Obama's people so they should boost him. I wish someone would boost him right off of this planet before he destroys America and starts world war three with his loving of the terrorist Hamas and rewarding Egypt for letting Hamas bring in more guns and ammo to kill more Jews. The UN is probably very happy they almost have Israel destroyed.

It is time for the USA to start putting some pressure on Israel. The USA should not veto the UN resolution. The USA needs to stop all aid to Israel until they return the land they occupied after the 1967 war. If that does not work, the UN needs to impose sanctions on Israel until they do. That is the only way there will ever be peace. The Israelis are perfectly happy with the status quo, but that is not acceptable.

your-one-king,
Do you think the US was wise or unwise in returning the lands in Europe, Japan, and the Pacific that we occupied after WWII? What do you think it would have happened had we not returned those lands? I bet WWII would still be going on, but in a different way.

You can try to capture another countries land, but if they fight back, then you'll have to choose between a perpetual war and giving the land back. The difference here is that the Mexicans, for whatever reason, they did not see the need to fight back. Had they done that, we would have had to reach an agreement, because nobody in the US or Mexico are stupid enough to want a perpetual war. The Israelis are the only idiots in the history of the world who do not mind fighting perpetual wars. It is really that simple.
