Leaked Cables Reveal Location of European Nukes

The U.S. has about 200 tactical nuclear weapons in Europe. The leaked Wikileaks diplomatic cables reveal some may be in Germany, as a German administrator admitted the country possessed 20 tactical nuclear weapons in late 2009.

Nuclear weapons residing in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium in late 2009 were a crucial chess piece in international disarmament negotiations, according to leaked U.S. diplomatic cables from the website Wikileaks.

In a conversation between U.S. Ambassador Philip D. Murphy and German National Security Advisor Christoph Heusgen reprinted in one cable, the two statesmen discussed German concerns about taking nuclear weapons out of the country.

"Heusgen said that from his perspective, it made no sense to unilaterally withdraw 'the 20' tactical nuclear weapons still in Germany while Russia maintains 'thousands' of them. It would only be worth it if both sides drew down," the cable states.

The Center for Defense Information describes tactical nuclear weapons as "smaller and shorter-range." Of the 500 or so tactical nuclear weapons in the U.S. arsenal, it is known that about 200 are deployed throughout Europe, according to the latest report from Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The cables do not reveal specifically whether "the 20" in Germany were of U.S. origin.

Many other tactical nuclear weapons rest in the Netherlands and Belgium, according to the diplomatic cable.

"A withdrawal of nuclear weapons from Germany and perhaps from Belgium and the Netherlands could make it very difficult politically for Turkey to maintain its own stockpile, even though it was still convinced of the need to do so," the cable states.

It has long been known that Britain and France maintain nuclear weapons, however those were produced in their respective countries. Details of the deployment of the U.S.'s nuclear arsenal has always been a closely guarded secret until the release of the Wikileak cables.

Other countries not mentioned here known to maintain usable nuclear weapons include China, India, Pakistan, and Israel, according to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. While it is known that North Korea possesses nuclear weapons technology, there is dispute over whether they have the ability to launch the weapons.

In another leaked cable that details a January, 2009, meeting between U.S. and Dutch embassy officials and Dr. Prince Turki Al-Kabeer, an undersecretary in the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iran's alleged nuclear program may have a dramatic impact on nuclear weapons deployment throughout the rest of the world.

The writer of the cable states: "Prince Turki warned that if Iran tried to produce nuclear weapons, other countries in the Gulf region would be compelled to do the same, or to permit the stationing of nuclear weapons in the Gulf to serve as a deterrent to the Iranians. This is the most explicit mention we have heard of Saudi willingness to see nuclear weapons deployed in the (Middle East) as a deterrent to Iran."

Can any American recognize a NAZI? if he is not waving a red and black flag with a swastika on it? Do you know anything about the Philosophy of the NAZI's? Who was Carl Schmitt? Who was Ernst Fraenkel?
Have you even bothered to read a book recently? May I suggest that you read "CONSTITUTIONAL CHAOS", written by Judge Andrew P. Napolitano. Also if you like, maybe read Schmitt and Fraenkel.

These people are heros to expose crimes against humanity, mostly done by the state sponsor of terror, the United States. They should ban ALL nuclear weapons before some idiot, airhead, ignorant, loser like Palin gets any power.

It is NOT a crime to expose crimes.

G. W. Bush was not far from being a Mad Man, then again he was, Just what did Iraq do to deserve to be invaded? One of the accomplished of Bush was to engineer the consent of the American people to allow for the Election of Barack Obama. That is right folks what I am saying is that without Bush, or Bush's help we would not have Barack Obama as president, was this a plan? Is the purpose of the presidency of Barack Obama to engineer the consent of the American People for the election of Palin? And continue America on its downward spiral to end up like the Weimar Republic? so that we can have a new form of government?

code_name_nina10, we A-bombed those Japanese cities because of the completely barbaric bloodshed they committed on our troops on Iwo Jima, fighting us down to their last man, woman, and child (and those that didn't fight committed suicide) rather than surrender in the face of impossible odds. They were flippin' crazy, and we didn't want to have to face that again on a much larger scale in the invasion of Japan. We had to show them that we could kill their civilians without them having a fighting chance rather than the Japanese emperor forcing them to suicide-bomb our troops. After the emperor surrendered and we took Japan, we found massive-scale plans for suicide attacks against our forces, so we were justified. Look it up sometime if you care to get educated. (BTW, in my opinion, we should nuke your jihadists today since they like to also suicide bomb and involve civilians in their fights.)

I cannot entirely condemn guerilla journalism, but I wonder what WikiLeaks thinks they are accomplishing and what their motives are. Undermining diplomacy and revealing strategic locations is a dangerous game. Interesting in the unlikely event that these leaks were to foment a war. That's certainly something Assange could be proud of.

Did he actually reveal any locations, or is the title of this article misleading? I couldn't find any listing of any locations, just a more detailed account of what countries have what types of nukes ...

Well, the countries are the locations. Luxemborg is nuke-free. :)

I've heard a couple of reports that said it's not clear this WikiLeaks guy committed a crime - did he not put that Private up to stealing all this classified info? Why else would a private ever think to copy info like this if not for this WikiLeaks guy? He must have put him up to it ...

Anyways, nobody ever actually talks about the world's nuclear stockpiles, so to hear them all listed ... probably it's info that's out there for anybody who was interested to know, but it's scary to read this long list.

PS Did the leaks reveal actual locations of nukes, or was the headline saying that the leaks sheds further light upon which countries in Europe are in possession of nukes? I didn't read anything about locations given, did I miss it?

Yes, you missed it. :)

The countries were identified, but not specific locations.

Reality-Checker says:
Let me get this straight....we are supposed to be "Secure" because we keep our secrets and make the "Other Side-Insecure".....and the "Other Side" is supposed to be "Secure" because they keep their secrets from us and make us "Insecure". Well, if anyone still believes in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny, all this bologna is true. Sooner or later, people get tired of believing the unbelievable. The sooner that President Obama can reverse the executive order given by President Eisenhauer during the Cold War which gave the National Security Agency independence and a blank check for a classified budget, the sooner the USA can stop growing government and government spending faster than taxpayers can earn and pay taxes. Wikileaks has just proven that we put our stock in failed concept after the Cold War was finished in 1989, and now have a porcupine loose in our balloon factory! Reorganizing government was done in 1947 to fight the Cold War. It was over in 1989, and we still haven't reorganized or scaled back. The Patriot Act and the un-justified invasion of Iraq has created more insecurity than the 9-11 attack itself. We aren't free people anymore. There is a bigger enemy inside the NSA than all the terrorists combined. They are spending our money without restraint and diplomats can't seem to recover from the damages NSA has caused the USA. NSA likes to keep Americans too afraid and insecure to trust anyone but them. I don't fall for it anymore. President Obama needs to affirm that he is in charge and kick some NSA AZZ.

About our "Secure State" Little quote from the"INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE", todays edition, page 8,
American Schizophrenia Upends the New Start treaty.
"Last week the U. S. Energy Department's inspector general cited 16 incidents in which agents driving trucks carrying nuclear weapons were intoxicated. Two were arrested at a bar"
Not only does America have drunks with guns on the highway they have drunks with nuclear weapons, this situation is ripe for some home grown terrorist to hijack a truck with nuclear weapons.

Is it true this Wiki guy asked the White House if there was anything they felt would so jeopardize national security that WikiLeaks shouldn't release it, and the White House refused?

Doesn't that kind of undercut their argument that these releases jeopardize national security? I mean, I'm not sure myself ... it just feels like they couldn't have felt there was really that much risk involved if they declined, right?
