With Debate and Bailout Bill Still Uncertain, McCain Stays in Washington

(CBS)

From CBS News' John Bentley:

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – John McCain will stay here tonight as he continues to work on the proposed bailout bill, further jeopardizing the chances of the first presidential debate taking place tomorrow night. Meeting with Congressional leaders, President Bush, and Barack Obama today, McCain reportedly brought up alternative proposals to the bailout plan, not all of which were supported by Democrats. But his campaign was quick to add that McCain was not pushing a Republican agenda.

"We are not pushing any specific proposal," said campaign spokesman Jill Hazelbaker. "We are dedicated to brokering a quality agreement on a bipartisan basis."

Obama will also spend the night in Washington. Tomorrow night's debate isn't scheduled until 9pm Eastern time, so both candidates could conceivably work on the bailout plan tomorrow in Washington, then fly to Oxford, Mississippi, tomorrow for the debate.

BILL CLINTON SAYS DEMOCRATS TO BLAME FOR FANNIE MAE MELTDOWN

President Bill Clinton told ABC News That the blame for the Fannie Mae Meltdown Lies squarely at the feet of DEMOCRATS who blocked efforts to regulate and investigate Fannie Mae. You have to admire his candor -

I think there are 2 former CEOs of Fannie Mae, a former assistant CEO, at least Two United States Senators and at least one member of the US House of Representatives who should GO TO JAIL for this! They were involved in BRIBING members of Congress to block investigations of Fannie Mae Abuses.

As I have said before, MCcain is in Washington. To watch over his wife and friends investments. If it was Country First, he would be at the debates. Who do he think, he''s fooling. Its all about the Numbers.

Regardless of political beliefs, this whole mess started in 1995 when President Bill Clinton decided to de-regulate the mortgage lending in this country. Reducing or completely eliminating the need for a down payment on a home. Thus reducing a vested personal interest that a person or persons had in their home. This also lent to the mortgage companies lending above and beyond what a consumer could "actually" afford. this spans the gamut of housing whether it was a 50,0000 house or a 500,000 house. The Whitehouse then proclaimed that more Americans than ever now are living the American Dream. What really happened is now vivedly clear, the taxpayer is now footing the bill that that the Clintons began. You see we are to pick up the pieces that many people prospered from, created a legacy from and everyone is looking at the administration now for answers to problem that they did not even create. This was socialized housing at best and look at where it has gotten us. The mortgage lenders and markets would have been fine if left alone. The growth at the time would have been less but it would have been true. Housing in many parts of the country would not have skyrocketed, because less people would have qualified thus keeping these areas in check. Home prices would have stayed stable, the lenders would be safe, and the markets would have not been buying bad bundled loans.

Reports are that McCain had nothing at all to add to the discussion at the White house. McCain spoke 2 minutes, adding nothing of substance to the talks, and certainly not moving discussions forward.

Obama listened to the Republican counter-proposal and asked intelligent questions of the Republicans and Secretary Paulson. Obama presented 5 principles that should be part of a solution.

McCain babbled something unintelligible and smiled for the cameras.

Who is leading? Obama. Who is engaged? Obama.

Who tried to set this up as a photo op? McCain.

Who cravenly created a campaign "event" out of a real crisis? McCain.

Who is acting panicked? McCain.

Who is being stable and thoughtful while working to a solution? Obama.

Who would keep a steady hand on the wheel of the ship of state? Clearly Obama.

I rather my Presidential candidate stay up all night in Washington and make sure that a solution can be found so that 1/ I do not wake up the next morning finding that all my investments has been reduced to $0 OR 2/ I will not be stuck with a giant bill that is a failed BAIL-OUT plan ...Either way , Mc Cain has shown that he indeed puts his Country before his campaign . Mc CAin rather lose an election than lose a war or lose the porfolio of millions of fellow Americans ...Mc Cain suspended the convention to help hurricane''s victims , now , as the Perfect Financial Hurricane looming over the horizon ready to render Americans'' savings worthless, MC Cain has once agian ,shown that he is willing to put everything on the line for his country . NOw as we all see , the Bail-out plan is not as easy to be completed like all have hoped , both sides will say that the other side is at fault , BUT if the do not have a completed plan by next week morning , the stock market may crash , the surviving banks will go out of business and the country will be in a depression , This is NO JOKE ... KUDOS to Mc cain to scrap the debate to try to save the Country !

The insurance plan of Paul Ryan, and others sure looks to me like something we need to look at rather then this silly Bush bailout plan I hope John McCain is truly going to push the plan and get both sides to realize that this is what the American tax payer will accept.

As an Independant voter from WI, I find it refreshing that John McCain, is willing to go against his party and look out for the American people by not going for the bailout plan. The problem with Washington, is all the handouts that we have to pay for. The President and Congress have such low ratings because both are so far out of touch with what the average person in America wants. We want less government, and we do not want to have our hard earned money sent to help bailout everyone who gets in trouble. Yes we need to deal with the financial mess, but not with a bailout and then pork added by both the Dems and Rep. to make it exceptable for both sides. We the average working class need a man who will not expand government. What has government ever done right, People wake up and use your heads and realize that the answer is that Wallstreet needs to take the responsibility and the risk of fixing this mess not us the American tax payer.

Postcards from Washington.

McCain''s campaign sure hasn''t suffered from being "suspended". Three From The Road posts today alone?

If McCain suggested some alternatives to the bail-out plan, could you let the reader know?

No talk of the house republicans, again. Any problem with them?

More meat with the posts, other than candidates are spending the night in Washington.
