Palin Reels In Nearly $1 Million At First Fundraiser

(CBS)
(CANTON, Ohio) Sarah Palin has been a star for John McCain on the campaign trail, and at her first national fundraiser in Canton, Ohio, she proved she can raise a buck for the Republicans, too.
According to local businessman Tim Timkin, who hosted the event at the Brookside Country Club, the Palin fundraiser pulled in "just shy of $1 million" for the Republican Party. The McCain/Palin campaign is prohibited from raising money directly, since it chose to accept public funds for the general election.
Recalling her speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Palin said the "teleprompter got messed up. I wasn't able to follow it, so I just decided I was going to talk to the people right in front of me, and it was Ohio," referring to the Buckeye State's delegation.
Palin also acknowledged the critical role Ohio will play on Election Day and said flat-out, "We have to take Ohio."
After Palin finished speaking to the crowd of a couple hundred donors, she handed the microphone off to her husband Todd, who was characteristically pithy in his remarks.
"I just want to thank all of you for supporting this ticket. It's the right ticket to support, and you've got a beautiful state. Go Buckeyes," he said.
