Huckabee vs. "Them"

MONTGOMERY, ALA. -- Mike Huckabee's got a new campaign sign but he's not taking credit for it.

On one side, the usual: "I like Mike." The other: "Us versus Them."

"Can you tell me who 'them' is?" I asked at a press conference.

"I don't know," he said. He speculated the signs had been printed by the local Huckabee hub. "I've seen a few of them for the first time this week myself."

But on second thought, he said, "I think it's us against you," pointing his finger in my camera. "I think it's you, Joy, that we're against. You're the them." He laughed.

Me: "Seriously! You mean the media?"

"Nahh. You guys are okay, you guys are all right," he laughed.

Then, in a 180, he stopped smiling and deadpanned. "Except you. Everybody else is okay."

by copaul February 3, 2008 5:51 PM EST: I find it interesting, that on the Laura Ingraham radio show earlier this week, that in the Fla primary, most Huckabee supporters had McCain as their 2nd choice. Romney being a two-faced liar, this is understandable. But yet, all the neo-con pundits continue to say that Huckabee is slowing Mitt. Personally, I think it is the other way around. I also take great pleasure that the very conservative Rudy(according to Hannity and buddies) is backing McCain. And obviously, Thompson was thrown in to detract SC vboters from Huck(I had always wondered why he was in the race. He obviously didn''t want to be there). And, I find it interesting that the most conservative of all republicans to run, Duncan Hunter, has endorsed Huck, but where is it in the press, especially when they try to hit Huck with illegal immigration.
Once again, and as much as they will protest the point, the press is trying to decide who is allowed to be president. Every election is the same. They have their darlings, and anyone else is either debased, pigeonholed or ignored. Unfortunately, most people in this country are to blind, or lazy or just dumb, to figure things out on their own.; Reply to this comment

Mike called the Media OK, which is a way of being nice to them. they have been horrible and in my book, evil bought by the Washington elite! They are afraid of the truth coming to Washington and have pulled every trick in the book to stop Mike.

No Joy everyone in the media is not OK, but you have been great! That is what appears to be what Mike has said. Ask him.

We are all guilty of mistaking thoughts and actions of others at one time or another. But one clear fact has been, the media has done it''s best to stop the one true authentic candidate of the people we have had in a long long long time. You best pray that Mike wins, for the alternative is not pretty for our future as a Nation.; Reply to this comment


by aslinn February 3, 2008 2:59 PM EST: With 12 ethic charges, I can''t understand how Christian Conservatives can continue to believe Huckabee''s golden tongue. His No Amnesty pledges are just dishonest. One only needs to see Huckabees record and Mexican consulate expansion in his home state to to see his Pro-Amnesty positions.

by stfannin February 3, 2008 1:06 PM EST: That was an interesting exchange. As a native Arkansan I''ve been really impressed with how well behaved Mike has been with the press. After a decade of nasty, personal (and highly entertaining) feuding with media of every political stripe here at home, I was sure he''d have a little more trouble swallowing the negative press. Those campaign signs are interesting, because if any words could sum up his term in the governor''s office it''d be "Us vs. Them", and the "them" was usually every newspaper in the state, especially the Republican Democrat-Gazette. Neither Republican or Democrat much cottoned to his abuse of his office in soliciting gifts and favors for himself and his family, and he never seemed to understand why. The barbs that were delivered to editors on the governor''s stationery... fun days.

He''s fortunate the other Republican candidates aren''t giving him too much attention right now. (It has gotten nasty with Romney and is bound to get worse.) If and when they do lay it on, I think the mudslinging Huck will wake up.; Reply to this comment

by SealTeam2 February 3, 2008 8:02 AM EST: Perhaps only once or twice in an American''s lifetime does a candidate for President of the United States come along who is genuinely honest and forthright. Ronald Reagan was one and Mike Huckabee is another, however, all the "powers to be" have banded together to destroy his chances at becoming our 44th President of the United States. Yes, "them" is the media, (conservative & liberal), the conservative talking heads,(Hannity, Limbaugh, Ingrahm), the Club for Growth and the Republican establishment which has been infiltrated by liberal wolves such as Mitt Romney, John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, et.al.

Mike Huckabee is the only true conservative in the Republican race and the refusal of the status quo to back him will deliver our nation over to the Socialists in November and we, as a nation will begin the downward spiral into the fires of hell, unparalleled in American history.

I have personally written Mike Huckabee, urging him not to sign on with John McCain if the VP position is offered to him. Mike is a principled man and he should never sign on with a flip-flopping, back-stabbing liberal like John McCain. Perhaps Mike will be able to come back and fight another day for our country, if there be anything left to salvage.; Reply to this comment
