GOP Candidates Swing by Auto Show

From CBS News' Dante Higgins and Nancy Cordes:

DETROIT -- The North American International Auto Show was candidate central today as three Republican presidential candidates stopped by to check it out.

John McCain adjusted his campaign schedule in Michigan today to make room for a visit, leaving the trail and his traveling press after an event in Silver Lake to tour the Auto Show.

"He's going to see first-hand the future of Michigan and the U.S. The green technology revolution of the auto industry begins here in Michigan," McCain campaign advisor Mark Salter told CBS News.

McCain has offered the idea of using new technologies in the automotive industry to help bring Michigan's economy back. Many of those technologies including hydrogen, ethanol, and battery powered vehicles will be on display at the auto show. His opponents Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee will also be in attendance.

His wife Cindy McCain and Republican South Dakota Senator John Thune will appear at McCain's last campaign event he will miss due to the change in plans.

CBS News Correspondent Nancy Cordes reports that Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney also visited the Auto Show and came within 20 yards of each other.

"Just one car and two phalanxes of cameras separated them. They both knew the other was nearby, and their aides kept running back and forth nervously to see what the other camp was doing," reports Cordes.

"Huckabee's people were mischeviously trying to engineer an encounter between the two, but Romney's folks did not seem nearly as interested. Now the two men have gone their separate ways, to the great disappointment of all us reporters who were hoping for some fireworks or at the very least a tense handshake."

$100,000 = $26,000 yr = $500 wk
$75,000 = $19,500 yr = $375 wk
$50,000 = $13,000 yr = $250 wk
$25,000 = $6,500 yr = $125 wk

Yr Salary = Yr Tax = Wkly Tax

This is how much money you get to KEEP if you Vote for Huckabee!

Huckabee is the ONLY one who will implement the Fair Tax law to abolish income tax & change to sales tax when he becomes president.

Just think of how many things you can do with this extra money every week (after week, .....)!

You choose how to spend this extra money (charities, house payments, food, furniture, trips, activities, etc). Bottom line, you get to choose how to spend that money.

If you want to become poorer then vote for McCain, Romney, Thompson, Guiliani, Paul, Clinton, Obama, Edwards.

But if you want to become Richer then vote for Huckabee!

I like the fact that Huckabee is not afraid to embrace bold ideas and policy proposals, unlike any of the other candidates.

He wants to achieve energy independence within 10 years. That is a tall order, and I''m not sure it will be achieved. But I''d rather vote for someone who aims high than someone who doesn''t even try.

When we put our mind to it, we can achieve great things. During World War II, we increased our output of airplanes by almost 1,000 fold. The Manhattan Project created the atomic bomb, for better or for worse. And Kennedy inspired the nation to get to the moon.

I firmly believe that Huckabee is the kind of inspiring, positive President that will push America to retake technological leadership and achieve energy independence soon.

And this will benefit Michigan and the auto industry immensely.

Huckabee knows that it is not the government''s job to bail out a failing auto industry.

However, he also knows that the government DOES have a legitimate role in leveling the playing field through its tax policy.

Our current tax policy is very harmful to business, including the auto industry. The high cost of tax compliance is a dead weight to the entire economy. But more importantly, the fact that the U.S. has the highest corporate tax rates among industrialized countries puts our companies at a disadvantage against foreign products.

Huckabee wants to level the playing field by eliminating such taxes. The FairTax would level the playing field, by putting an equal tax on both foreign and domestic cars.

Huckabee has used rhetoric criticizing businesses that lay off people while CEOs reap record rewards. But far from being an anti-business populist, Huckabee has a very business-friendly record as governor of Arkansas. He just wants us to make sure to remember people at all levels of the economic ladder.

As he has said in his address a few days ago to the Detroit Economic Club, he''s not out to cut down the rich. He is out to make sure the poor have access to the American Dream, to themselves climb the ladder and become rich.

giantrobot2, please stop spamming comment fields with this stuff. I understand and agree with your message: that the FairTax will put more money in your pocket. But I find it a bit crass and materialistic the way you present it.

Many people are just trying to make ends meet, and get out of debt, not buy 60" Plasma TVs.

Furthermore, spamming comments all over the place, when they are not relevant to the story, just makes you look bad. If you really want to help Huckabee, then write some thoughtful comments.

Thanks for your more helpful comments on other articles.

Alert *** Alert *** Alert ***

Question:
Would you like to own a brand new high definition 60" LCD / Plasma TV with reclining chair with large cup holder for your cold beverage of your choice?

Answer:
Huckabee! He is the ONLY candidate out of the presidential field willing to implement the "Fair-Tax" system.

Look at your paycheck and see how much they are taking out of your paycheck for taxes... go ahead go look at it now.

Now take the cost of a brand new 60" LCD / Plasma high def TV and reclining chair (& cup holder) and divide that number by how much taxes they are taking out.

Example:
$3,000 (TV cost, chair) / $325 tax holding each week = 8 weeks

That''''s it, only 8 weeks to get this great deal!!!

But if you vote for any other candidate it will take years to save up for this! Say you put away $10 each week, well that''''s 4 years!

So if you want to become poorer then vote for McCain, Romney, Thompson, Guiliani, Paul, Clinton, Obama, Edwards..... but if you want to become richer vote for Huckabee!
