McCain Cheered - and Jeered - in Michigan

LIVONIA, MICH. -- John McCain talked about the economy, jobs and taxes at the Americans For Prosperity Foundation conference today and was also jeered for his remarks on immigration.

He addressed Michigan's economic woes saying, "Unemployment is five percent nationwide, but over seven percent in Michigan. Ten percent of Michigan's jobs have disappeared this decade and 50,000 people left the state in the past year. Michigan's problems are rooted in failed government policies."

McCain also told the free-market group about his ideas for lowering taxes.

"At a time when it can be hard for families to weather tough economic times, the government should not make it harder. We should cut taxes right now on the middle class by eliminating the Alternative Minimum Tax, which no longer taxes just the rich. It taxes 25 million middle class families, taking from them nearly $2,200 per family."

During the Q & A after his speech, he was asked about his position on immigration and was booed as he gave his response.

"Maam, you've got to be polite, I'll be polite to you. I'll even call on you next," McCain said. He then continued his response when someone yelled out again.

"Ahh come on give it a rest," he said before explaining how he would address 10 million people left in the country after 2 million were deported automatically. More voices shouted back from the crowd, "How many taxes do you want to spend?"

McCain stopped and said "I will secure the border…I am not going to call up a soldier and tell him I am deporting his mother…I'm not going to do it. You can do it," he said to applause before moving on to the next question.

On the bus after the event McCain told to reporters, "That was fun!"

"There is a level of emotion that is hard to explain with this issue and it was evident that my explanation was not going to be heard." McCain said.

by l2rertee January 13, 2008 1:39 AM EST: As a social conservative, I have a few issues with Sen. McCain. He has said that he has no problem with homosexual mariage. He is not pro-life(he believes in killing unborn children for their stem cells). He is against free speach by writing McCain-Fiengold which limits who can speak. Thanks.; Reply to this comment

He''s a fierce fiscal conservative, unwaveringly pro-life on abortion issues, staunchly free-market on trade and economic matters, favors making the Bush tax cuts permanent, supports nuclear power as a clean-energy alternative, champions school choice as the vital lever for education reform, advocates smaller and more accountable government, and, of course, is a lifelong proponent of a strong national defense and an assertive foreign policy.

The "real conservatives" should realize that McCain is their best chance at keeping the WH and they should shut up and support him.; Reply to this comment

by Lasero1 January 12, 2008 8:18 PM EST: We hope Senator McCain asks Romney about the issue that the Dept of Justice being engaged in the cover up efforts concerning the $300 million in perjury and fraud that benefited Bain concerning eToys.

Also there are many more criminal questions that must be answered concerning Sodexho, Bain, Sankaty, Granite Bank, KB Toys, Stage Stores, Learning Company and more.

by michaelj90 January 12, 2008 8:00 PM EST: Taxes? McCain is one of a very few that tried to stop PORK parties, fraud, and abusive/wasteful spending in many billions of dollars. That is part of the tax equation no one is thinking about. He has been consistent on his fiduciary duties with the taxpayers funds.

As for immigration, McCain speaks the ''truth.'' If the next President just secures the borders that would be an achievement alone. Plug the hole in the boat before manning the buckets. Get rid of the criminals. THEN debate the others... the first two elements wont even come to fruition - the last is moot until then.

Romney claimed he "did not know" and as a homeowner should not be "expected" to know. Romney did know the costs where cheaper though. But the worst was after Romney found out by the press of the illegals working in his yard, Romney DID NOT FIRE THE CONTRACTOR (deport 12 Million people? How about not patronizing cheap labor first - BS artist), instead he asked the contractor to promise not to use illegal immigrants at his house, because of his political self-absorbed ambitions. The contractor made a Romney-like promise as the press ONCE AGAIN for a SECOND TIME found illegal immigrants cutting the Royal shrubbery at the mansion in Belmont, MA"; Reply to this comment
