Bill Clinton Reacts to Bhutto Assassination
ADEL, IOWA -- Former President Bill Clinton reacted to the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto during a campaign event on behalf of his wife.
"We knew her quite well for many years, she was prime minister when I became president. We knew her before that and i have seen her in years since," Clinton said.
"She was a courageous woman who deeply believed that the people of Pakistan wanted to live in freedom, that they wanted a democracy. They did not want either a military dictatorship or a radical Islamic regime to govern them, to control the lives of their children and their future."
"She paid a very high price for that and I have nothing to add to what Hillary said except we pray for her family, her husband and her three fine children."
"The other victims in Pakistan of this - and we hope the lesson that will be drawn - is that the more than 60 percent of people that supported her at the time of her assassination are still right. That for all of its problems, democracy is still the right course. They want it and I hope that in a final honor and tribute to her they will get it."
