Thompson Goes to Church

From CBS News' John Bentley:

MIAMI – Fred Thompson will be speaking at the Iglesia El Rey Jesus Sunday service tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., the campaign recently announced. This is Thompson's first public campaign stop at a church since he jumped into the race in September.

One of the largest Hispanic churches in Florida, making the stop serves three purposes for Thompson: reaching out to a Spanish-speaking audience, shoring up his religious credentials (which had been called into question after he said he didn't regularly attend church), and appealing to religious conservatives who might prefer his opponent Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister.

Thompson is in Miami for the Univision Republican Presidential Debate, which airs Sunday night at 7pm.

Fred says he is right with God, and I know he is right with the Constitution, that''s good enough for most of us Military Veterans.

I had to chuckle when I read this headline. STOP THE PRESSES: Fred Thompson is going to church on Sunday!

Heck, this might even be Thompson''s first stop at a church -- campaign or personal -- since he jumped into the race in September!

It''s difficult for this Christian conservative to connect to Thompson''s campaign, since he rarely bothers to attend church. As NBC pointed out, Thompson isn''t even a member of any Virginia church where he''s lived for over a decade.

Thompson''s "Beltway" residency and lifestyle more closely resembles that of other "status quo" establishment Republicans, who wear a badge of social conservatism for campaigning, but lack the spiritual convictions or leadership to effect real change in our nation''s capital.
