Thompson vs. Huckabee on Iran

COLUMBUS, OHIO -- At a news conference that just wrapped up, Fred Thompson was asked what he thought of Mike Huckabee drawing a blank when asked about recent reports about the National Intelligence Estimate re: Iran.

"Not only is Iran the major long-term threat to our country, the nuclear program is the most important part of the Iran consideration. For a presidential candidate not to know that and not to keep up with that is very suprising," said Thompson.

"These are the kinds of things I've been talking about all of my life. Now, if the American people have other priorities, if they want someone who smiles a lot more than I do, or someone who is a better quipster than I am, who has no experience in these areas, that's for the American people to decide."

Thompson is now en route to Davenport, Iowa.

by woodruffja December 7, 2007 7:04 PM EST: Gov. Huckabee has elevated his campaign from merely ridiculous to farcicle. It is ridiculous to tell a debate audience that he would abolish the Internal Revenue Service as a cost-saving measure. Perhaps that quip appeals to a certain infantile impulse of the overtaxed public, and may provide a degree of camouflage to conceal his shabby record on taxes while Governor of Arkansas. But for him to jest about the homicidal regime in Tehran and to have no coherent thought to express about the threat it poses, demostrates a shallowness of intellect that should cause Republican primary voters to question his seriousness as a potential commander-in-chief. And while I''m on the subject - can his apologists not offer up anything better than the lame excuse that the good Governor had been too busy campaigning to have read a newspaper? Maybe with joke writers still on strike, Huckabee''s supporters want to make life easier for television comedians.; Reply to this comment

None of the candidates have time to know moment by moment what''s going on so the surround themselves with people who will brief them. Huckabee to not know the biggest news of the day say''s alot about his lack of commitment and experience pertaining to the issues. He is a joke. When asked by Don Imus about serious Foriegn policy questions he gave a joke instead of a serious answer. We need a leader not a comedian. Someone who can get the job done. by jasontcpa December 7, 2007 4:38 PM EST: This is a rediculous statement by Thompson. Huckabee did not know about the report because he had been campaigning all day and had not yet been briefed on the report. The reporter who asked him this question was with him on the campaign trail and knew this so the question was a gotcha. Has Thompson never been in meetings all day and not have a chance to see the news? Iran is a very important issue to Huckabee and I am sure he can now answer the question.; Reply to this comment
