Richardson To Commerce?

CBS News has confirmed that New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is a serious contender to be tapped for Commerce Secretary. Richardson, a 2008 presidential candidate, had been on many lists for Secretary of State but that position appears to be New York Senator Hillary Clinton's if she chooses. CBS reported yesterday that the transition is on track to possibly make that announcement soon after Thanksgiving.

Richardson is currently in his second term as governor of New Mexico and would bring a broad resume of government service to the administration. He has served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has been Energy Secretary and the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Washingtonpost.com's Chris Cillizza, who first reported the possibility of the governor going to the Commerce Department, notes that the post was thought to be going to President-elect Obama's former campaign finance chair and friend Penny Pritzker, but she removed herself from consideration yesterday.

But what if Ralph Reagan, chairman of the Cumberland County Republican Party, is right in the local elephants%u2019 protest of the Nov. 4 county commissioners%u2019 election.

They contend the election was a sham.
They contend that thousands of early voters used fictitious or incorrect addresses.
They want a second election.
%u201CThey are only challenging the commissioners%u2019 race,%u201D says Terri Robertson, chairwoman of the Cumberland County Board of Elections. %u201CThey filed the protest at 4:59 p.m. on Monday.%u201D

That was with one minute left in the protest filing period.

Robertson says the board will review Reagan%u2019s petition at 9 a.m. Monday at the election office on Russell Street.

So, based on official election returns, the District 2 winners %u2014 all Democrats %u2014 were Kenneth Edge, an incumbent, 48,843; Jimmy Keefe, 43,712; and Marshall Faircloth, 42,909.

The losers %u2014 all Republicans %u2014 were Diane Wheatley, an incumbent, 38,000; Bob White, 28,515; and Jessie Bellflowers, 25,708.

Or were they losers, particularly Wheatley?

All depends on whether Reagan and the local Republicans can prove their case of voter registration fraud to the elections board.

And what if they can?

by sjbj2322 November 22, 2008 3:47 AM EST: Well the people of New Mexico must be elated over this announcement and I don''t mean that as a compliment to Governor Richardson. If he''d spent 1/10th his time in office actually doing something other than trying to rub elbows with the Sante Fe rich and famous, they might think differently but he approached the position as Governor for one reason - to launch his sights on the Presidency and we all know how poorly he did in the primaries. He is little more than a political opportunist. I can not imagine anyone thinking he can handle the job in the Commerce Department but rather there than as Secretary of State.; Reply to this comment
