Black Voters Played Role In Proposition 8

California's Proposition 8, an amendment to the state constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, was a hard-fought contest and its passage is still not certain (this has been updated.

It appears that black voters played a significant role in its passage. According to exit polls, black turnout was up in California this year, constituting ten percent of the electorate there this year compared to six percent four years ago. According to the CBS News Election and Survey unit's analysis, black voters overwhelmingly voted in favor of Prop. 8 – by a 70 percent to 30 percent margin. Hispanic voters overall favored the measure as well but only by a 53 percent to 47 percent margin. White voters were slightly on the side of approving it, 51 percent to 49 percent.

If the fact that discrimination of ANY kind/ the rights of individuals (adults) were enforced nationally. There would be no need for a Proposition 8. To say one group denied the rights MORE than another, instead of TRUTH that America as a whole caused this rebuttal of Proposition 8 is poor, cowardly,instigative, divisive, false, and the work of IDIOTS!

Churches have no business inflicting their will upon every one, along with people that do not subscribe to a specific belief system. This is not England%u2026the United States was founded on the freedom from imposed religion. The Republican Party has fashioned the issue of Marriage to help promote their Conservative Agenda and Monetary Gains Politically by exploiting religion and ax exempt Church Organizations.

Children growing up in a "normal" family of man and woman prevailed? No.. this didn''t change the fact that there are millions of gay families containing children. They still cohabitate.. they just don''t get the same kind of tax breaks married folks do so gay parents have less money to feed their children. They also don''t get to make medical decisions for their partner should the blood relatives protest.. they don''t get automatic inheritance rights and the blood relatives just protest that as well and win a lot of the times.

You just don''t care, do you? This makes me hope another religion takes over this country so you can see what it feels like when they take something from you because they don''t believe in it. Then you''ll be all worried about that 1st amendment then.

I''m a married woman btw but my little sister is gay. We went to private christian schools growing up. She was always this way. I ditched religion cause you''re hypocrites. if marriage is indeed defined by religion then it cannot be recognized by the federal gov''t because that would be violating the 1st amendment. marriage brings certain tax breaks and privileges under the law. so if we only give those breaks to a certain group that is defined by religion, then the gov''t is favoring religion. you can''t do that in this country. you just cant. either these rights are for all or none at all.

what the religious don''t realize is that they''re going to screw up and end up getting the word "marriage" removed from teh law books altogether and civil unions for everybody--hetero or gay.

This is very hypocritical. How can black people vote to take away a minority groups'' rights? The irony of it all is startling. I think that minorities need to take a good look at themselves and start thinking about how they can advance our society. Live and let live!

This is not a civil rights issue! No one is denying them their civil rights,we''re just distinguishing that marriage is a union between a man and a woman.If homosexuals want to live together,visit each other in the hospital,ect,they have that ability,but marriage should NOT be redefined.Our nation was founded on certain principles,and faith,family and life have to be upheld.It is wrong to encourage a climate of redefining marriage.What kind of schhol,like the teacher in CA,would bus school children to attends a gay wedding?That is indoctrination of innocent children,and that''s the kind of force the homosexual community wants to have on our children.Keep waht you do behind closed doors,and don''t corrupt impressionable children.Your lifestyle is a choice,not a God given lifestyle.
