Biden's Tax Returns Show Modest Wealth

(This post was written by CBS News' Ryan Corsaro and Brian Montopoli.)

The Obama campaign released 10 years of Sen. Joe Biden's tax returns today. You can see them here. As the returns show, Biden makes a relatively modest income compared to his Senate colleagues.

There are a few reasons for this: Neither Biden nor his wife, Jill, with whom he filed jointly, have enormous personal wealth. Jill is a teacher – not a high-paying job. And Biden has been in the Senate for almost his entire working career, unlike many of his colleagues who have worked in the private sector for a larger paycheck.

Joint income between Biden and his wife Jill rose from $215,000 to $249,000 between 1998 and 2006. These numbers reflect the total of Joe Biden's Senate salary, his Widener University School of Law teaching salary, and Jill Biden's teaching salary.

The Bidens give little to charity. 2007, in which they donated $995, was their most generous year, though in other years Biden donated honoraria from talk shows which were valued at higher amounts.

The Bidens make almost no money each year from dividends or interest. They deduct only state/local taxes, mortgage interest and what he donates to charity. 2003 was the last year they claimed a dependent child -- their daughter, Ashley.

Under the Obama tax plan, Biden's taxes would go up because of his tax bracket. To see how, check out the CBS Evening News video on how the Obama and McCain tax plans differ here.

As Politico notes, the release of Biden's tax returns is at least in part a move to pressure GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin to do the same; Palin has faced some questions about her personal income after reports that she billed the state for nights she spent at home. Republicans, meanwhile, are agitating for Biden to release past earmark requests.

Here's a breakdown on the numbers from CBS News Political Director Steve Chaggaris:

    Just your average Joe?

According to the IRS the average charitable giving percentage from a person of his tax bracket is 3%.

Sen. Biden gave in 2007 a whopping 0.31%. This was by the way his highest level of giving in the ten years... his lowest was 0.09% and he hovers around 0.13%.

The real average Joe was giving ten times the amount of Sen. Biden... at his most generous.

Mortal3, I know it''s hard for you to believe, because you''re not use to giving. But if you would try it, you''d like it. If our government wouldn''t take 40% of our income, charitable giving would increase for most people.

Probably not guys like Biden and Obama, they''d rather take from hardworking Americans, instead of give out of their own pockets.

Wait a second! I thought the Obama plan would only raise taxes on the rich?

Over the ten-year period, the Bidens have given only $120 - $995 per year to charity, which amounts to 0.06% - 0.31% of their income. The Bidens have averaged $369, or 98 percent less than those earning over $200K. During 2006-07 Obamas'' tax returns show that they gave 5.8% - 6.1% of their income to charity. During the same period John McCain''s tax returns show that he gave 27.3% - 28.6% of his income to charity. Change you can believe in as long as someone else pays for it.

So after getting his fancy law degree, Biden chooses to sit on his butt for 30 years as a scratch your back politician...especially in a state not even big enough to run an opponent against you...since your whole family is mired in Delaware politics.

ROFL! Biden is the only sucker they could get to stand up and run with Obama...he''s already a two time loser and there''s no chance of him losing his political career! All the other VP candidates fell off like flies they more they looked at Obama.

what a fraud - raise taxes to create more government charity but don''t give more than 1% of your own income to charity. Shameful but typical - Obama''s wasn''t much better.
