A Lot Of Lipstick, And A Lot Of Pigs

As you've likely heard by now, the McCain campaign has expressed outrage that Barack Obama used the phrase "lipstick on a pig" while discussing John McCain and Sarah Palin.

"Barack Obama's comments today are offensive and disgraceful," McCain-Palin spokesperson Maria Comella said in a statement yesterday. "He owes Governor Palin an apology."

Obama's ostensibly offensive comment followed his mockery of the McCain/Palin ticket for professing to embrace change.

"That's just calling something the same thing, something different," Obama said in Lebanon, Virginia. "But you know you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."

"You can you can, wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change, it's still going to stink after 8 years," he added. "We've had enough of the same old thing."

We'll leave it to you to judge whether Obama was somehow implying Palin was a pig, as former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift suggested in a Republican conference call. (Marc Ambinder, Ben Smith, Mike Huckabee and others say no. "I do not think he was referring to Sarah Palin; he didn't reference her," Huckabee said.) As you think on that, here are some other "lipstick on a pig" references for you to consider:

"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig." – John McCain, in reference to Hillary Clinton's health care plan, last year.

"George Bush has given a mission to General Petraeus, and he has done his best to try to figure out how to put lipstick on a pig." – Barack Obama, last year.

"Or as we say out in our home state of Wyoming, you can put all the lipstick you want on a pig, but it's still a pig." – Dick Cheney, 2004.

"It's all about withdrawal or not withdrawal, okay? I mean that's what it's all about. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig." – John McCain, last year.

"You can put lipstick and earrings on a hog and call it Monique, but it's still a pig." – Texas Gov. Ann Richards.

"John Kerry tries to put a bunch of fancy, fancy talk...but there is nothing you can do to really -- to really obscure that record. You can try, though. And in Wyoming, we've got a saying for what it is when you keep trying to make something that's not so good look good, we call it putting lipstick on a pig." – Lynne Cheney, 2004.

"It gets down to whether you support what's being done in this new strategy or you don't. You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig in my view." – John McCain, last year.

The Obama campaign also emailed to reporters quotes from more than 10 Republican officials who have used the phrase, among them House Minority Leader John Boehner and Former Republican Senator Rick Santorum.

McCain knows his complaints about Obama''s use of the same phrase McCain himself used for Hillary''s health care plan is another cynical attempt to throw sand into the eyes of the electorate. Cynical like his attempt to steal the Change theme from Obama, cynical like appointing an airhead Christian fundamentalist as VP candidate, .. where is the McCain of 2000 - a so-called man of honor and dignity? He is now a puppet of the Rove/Limbaugh clique that with Cheney controlled the Bushies. The War Hero that hides behind a woman''s skirts and throws sand in the eyes of the voters - McCain has made hollow the word Honor .

maybe.....if the polar bear had some lipstick it might bring some attention to their plight...

Governor Palin: is suing the Bush Administration Department of Interior for their decision to list the polar bear as endangered...and her willingness to drill for oil in the north slope where the polar bear habitat is...that is just one of the anti-human things she stands for...
go Obama....

I think the Republicans are trying to avoid the issues. Instead of the people and the media feeding into their web of lies we need to make them focus on the issues that matter most. If I hear one more ad about this lipstick and pig thing, I am going to go crazy. How can McCain charge Obama with sexism when he said the same comment on several occasions. In one instance it was relating to Hillary''s views on healthcare. Stop letting the Republican Party get away with murder. I am really upset that they are making this the topic on 9/11. The media really disappoints me!!

Hmmmm,......I think that there is a bad political weather prediction for a few top DNC schwhine''ocrats when the voting gales of November done counting. Howard Deans'' not-thinking political radar failed to see his own unemployment storm brewing on the left coast. Showers of much needed reality likely to continue through the season of defeat.

Here we go again with the phony Republican outrage. To anyone who''s actually willing to look it is obvious Obama wasn%u2019t referring to Palin, but rather to McCain and Palin%u2019s policies. Are Republicans really not smart enough to watch the entire quote and figure out what he meant? Is this the way they plan to handle international issues? Fain ignorance and pretend to be offended? That%u2019s a rhetorical question. We all know that%u2019s one of Republicans favorite shticks. Even Republicans know, but sometimes it works for them so they%u2019ll go with it.

Amazing! Of all the salacious bare faced lies aimed at Sarah Palin that this (I believe) INNOCENT remark is getting all this attention. Perhaps all this nastiness isn''t coming directly from Obama''s Election Campaign but he could get his supporters to tone it down. IT ISN''T WORKING FOR HIM!
