Huckabee Says Problem With Romney Is His "Inconsistencies," Not His Faith

Former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee today commented on the efforts of some of his supporters in Michigan and Ohio to convince presumptive GOP nominee John McCain not to ask former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate Mitt Romney to be his running mate.

"I think a lot of people, not just social conservatives, but a lot of the Republicans I know are not necessarily comfortable with Romney," Huckabee told CBSNews.com. "But it has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with inconsistencies in positions he's held, and that's it."

In response to buzz about the former Massachusetts governor becoming McCain's running mate, an alliance of Ohio social conservatives, many of whom are former Huckabee supporters, have formed a group called "Social Conservatives Against Romney." Romney had moderate positions on many hot-button social issues, including abortion, before his run for president.

Huckabee has also been discussed as a potential running mate for McCain, though he is seen as a long-shot possibility.

Evangelical leader Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, told CBSNews.com last week that Romney "would be an excellent choice" for McCain.

"There are people in the evangelical community who would have a problem with his Mormonism," he added. "I am not one of them. I mean, I'm very clear that I do not believe Mormonism is a Christian faith. But that does not disqualify someone from being President or Vice President. And my guess would be that, probably, about 15 to 20 percent of the evangelical community would have a problem with his Mormonism."

DavidE: You are spot-on my friend! It''s time some people woke up and realized that Mike Huckabee is one of the few around who will tell you the way it is and take the heat for being honest about it! It may not be what people WANT to hear, but if things don''t change and change fast...our country will go down the tubes so fast it will make your head spin! Remember the Romans? Take a lesson from them!

The economic conservatives in the Republican party learned a lot from Hitler: just keep repeating the big lie until everyone believes it. The real reason Mitt Romney will never be elected to national office is that he is perceived by the man on Main Street as being the tool of the people on Wall Street who hold the government hostage to policies that make the rich richer, the poor poorer, the middle class smaller, and the nation deeper in debt. The privileged elites must be thrown out of office. People don''t want Obama, but they will take him before they will permit more of what we have had for eight years. Only if McCain chooses a man of integrity like Huckabee will the people believe he is for real reform.

I find it hilarious reading a lot of these anti-Romney posts. Every single one of these bullet points about Romney''s record have already been either explained during the debates or dispelled by fact-checkers. Is this really all you Romney haters have? I think it is hilarious just how bad Romney scares the pants off of you cowardly liberals. Do any of you wonder what life might have been like if you got enough oxygen while in the womb? How do liberals walk without a spine to support them? Why were you raised to hate America? Please keep it up, this hilarity keeps those of us who have the gift of original thought in stitches. I can''t wait to see McCain rip B. Hussein Obama to shreds in the debates. A community organizer? Stop it, you''re killing me. Speaking of flip-flops, what about Osama and drilling? Or any of the other things he has done a 180 on? Too bad I am limited to 1500 characters in this post.

NOT Romney for V.P: In ''02 he refused to support a proposed "Protection of Marriage" amendment to Mass. constitution but now supports one; pledged as gov.he would "protect current pro-choice status quo in Mass and no law would change. Women should be free to choose based on their own beliefs, not gov''t''s."; "I believe that abortion should be safe and legal and we should sustain and support Roe v. Wade"; he stated he believed homosexuals should be allowed to serve as scoutmasters.."all people should be allowed to participate in Boy Scouts regardless of their sexual orientation"; Mitt has leaned more left when filling judicial vacancies..including two gay lawyers who have supported expanding same-*** rights." Mike Huckabee is absolutely SPOT-ON!!

What makes Romney most qualified. If you look at the fact Huckabee has Governing experience 10-1/2 years and Romney only has 4yrs as Governor, This would make Huckabee a Pro and Romney a rooky.
During the four years Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts, it had the second worst jobs record of state in America.%u201D %u201CBut for the destruction of New Orleans, Massachusetts under Romney would have come in dead last.%u201D (Boston Herald 2/21/07)
Also Romney was for abortion & gay marriage for much longer then he has been against it, he only started being against it when he decided to run for president. Can never trust Romney the Flip Flopper.

HUckabee used the religion card during the primaries and he''s using it again (although he will not admit it). There is a great book that just came out that talks about Romney''s campaign and the anti-Mormon bigotry. The book is called "A Different God? Mitt Romney, The Religious Right, and the Mormon Question and it is available at **********. It''s been great reading.

The Real Romney!!!
Romney most qualified???
Who%u2019s Going to Show Romney How the Economy Works?
Romney''s Economic Record As Governor Is Shaky At Best. Boston Globe business columnist Steve Bailey wrote, "Since January 2003, when Romney took office, through the end of last year Massachusetts ranked 46th in job growth, up just 1.1 percent. In the last year, the gap between Massachusetts and the nation has widened, with the state''s employment rising only four-tenths of 1 percent, or less than a third the national average of 1.3 percent. That put Massachusetts tied for 44th in the country. If all things in life are measured against expectations, Romney will have a particular problem explaining away the economy. He was going to be our CEO Governor, the state''s top salesman who could talk businessman-to-businessman and bring home those good-paying jobs. It was all bunk, of course. But he said it, and he will have to live with it. There are 40,000 fewer people in the workforce than when Romney took over." [Boston Globe, column, 2/15/06]

Knowing that Huckabee has already been taken off the list of potential Veeps, his comments should be taken at face value.

That''s not to say all social conservatives agree with him. There are some who bought Romney''s well-funded storyline about an epiphany bringing him from his ultra-liberal roots into the conservative fold.

I would have bought that too if it hadn''t coincided with Romney''s filing his candidacy papers.
