McCain Winning Over Some Conservatives, But Not Coulter

Horserace has been keeping a close eye on the relationship between John McCain and the two vocal groups on the right largely opposed to his candidacy – establishment conservatives and right-wing talk show hosts. Today brings mixed news for McCain on that front.

The New York Times reports that some of McCain's conservative critics – among them Christian conservative Tony Perkins, the Southern Baptist Convention's Richard Land, and antitax crusader Grover Norquist -- are warming to the senator.

"When I hear Rush Limbaugh say that a McCain nomination would destroy the Republican Party," the Times quotes Land saying, "what I want to say to Rush is, 'You need to get out of the studio more and talk to real people.'"

McCain consistently casts himself as a conservative, but his past positions on campaign finance reform, the Bush tax cuts, immigration, and other issues have angered some on the right. He is trying to repair the rift, having committed to speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference, an important gathering for movement conservatives that he skipped last year, next week.

But there are still plenty of conservatives, particularly in the talk show-host ranks, who have not exactly embraced a McCain candidacy. Radio host Laura Ingraham and former Sen. Rick Santorum today backed Mitt Romney, and on Fox News yesterday, controversial right-wing pundit Ann Coulter vowed that if John McCain and Hillary Clinton are the two parties' presidential nominees, she'll be campaigning for the Democrat.

"If he's our candidate, then Hillary's going to be our girl, Sean, 'cause she's more conservative than he is," Coulter told Fox News host Sean Hannity. "I think she would be stronger on the war on terrorism."

"I would trust any Republican but John McCain more than Hillary Clinton," she added. "If it's John McCain, Hillary is absolutely more conservative."

Are you Republicans finally starting to realize what a loon Coulter is now?! She''s nuts! It was all fun and games when her ire was directed at the Dems, but now she''s starting to cannibalize her own.

It''s time to put her out of her misery FOX NEWS! Put her down like the sad, sick cow she is!

zerga1, it appears you have been watching too much Fox News, and have become unfair and unbalanced as a result. Unlike the psuedo conservatives such as Coulter and Limbaugh, McCain served his country with dignity and sacrifice. Members of his family are serving in Iraq right now. You should stop your ranting long enough to look at which candidate will provide the leadership required to defeat the Democrats, John McCain.

McCain is winning over conservatives? Where is this happening? Maybe in the states of Tamaulipas, Jalisco and Chihuahua of Mexico? What carelessly informed dupe writes this nonsense?

It would appear that this propaganda drivel is lifted directly off a McCain campaign blurb sheet and as standard practice regurgitated as genuine news.

Fact is, the level of revulsion and loathing held for McCain among not only conservatives but rational informed citizens is without concordance in modern American history.

Should McCain with the help of his masters and minion manage to hijack the nomination, record of numbers of prospective voters will either cast a ballot for Bozo the Clown or not show up at all.

People feel as if the despised apostate McCain is being jammed down their throats by a leftist anti-American agenda media, the cabal of elite hack politicians and corrupt Washington insiders.

McCain is not and can not win over enough conservatives to make anything matter. He is considered an sworn enemy.

IMHO, The President should focus primarily National Security and the economy.
Too little attention has been paid to getting our nation off of oil through supporting energy alternatives such as Plug In Hybrids.
Eliminating oil imports will reverse the imbalance of trade, while developing and exporting the technology for an "oil free" economy will create jobs. Just as important, a collapse in the price of oil will remove funding for terrorist and those that hate the US.

Senator McCain is the only candidate who is a member of SETAMERICAFREE.ORG.

He is a REAL American and a TRUE conservative and I know where Ann Coulter can stick her Hillary campaign button.

Why is no one covering Senator John McCain%u2019s dubious past? His apparently close family links to organized crime? His apparent involvement in defrauding US tax payers of hundreds of millions of dollars as a member of the Keating Five? His appalling record in the treatment of veterans and veterans%u2019 families and the families of MIAs? The following appeared 11 years ago on a small veterans%u2019 website and has been ignored since. Why?
