Thompson Exits, But Does Anyone Gain?

3736891Fred Thompson's exit from the presidential race comes after his once heralded candidacy failed to gain significant traction. However, it also comes after the South Carolina primary which, according to Saturday's results, showed that Thompson played a role in keeping Mike Huckabee from passing John McCain in the final tally – Thompson performed best in the Upstate area that was Huckabee's main source of votes, and he freely criticized the former Arkansas governor during the Palmetto State campaign. Thompson also nabbed the support of 15 percent of the state's primary voters who described themselves as evangelical Christians, according to CBS News exit polls. Huckabee received 43 percent.

This could be significant: Thompson never had much chance of winning any contests down the road, but he did demonstrate a capacity to influence the outcome in a spoiler role. But does the spoiler's exit help out Huckabee or hurt any other candidates? That question could be answered as soon as next week in Florida's Jan. 29 primary. That leads into Super Tuesday on Feb. 5, when five southern, conservative states – Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia – are among the 21 holding GOP contests.

But Thompson's role as South Carolina spoiler doesn't mean his absence is automatically a boon for Huckabee. For one, aside from immigration, very little actually separated Thompson's positions in the campaign from those of John McCain – in fact, the two are friendly off the trail. The Arizona senator, now the closest thing the GOP has to a front-runner, could be an appealing choice for those who were considering Thompson, especially should the former Tennessee senator decide to endorse his old friend.

Plus, even if Huckabee wins those southern states, he's already expected to take one of them, his native Arkansas, and the other four provide only a small number of the overall delegates up for grabs. And if those are the only states Huckabee wins on Feb. 5, he would be marginalized as a regional candidate.

Still, Thompson has gotten the support of about 9 percent of Republicans in recent national polls as well as in Florida, and that support has to go somewhere. In a Florida race where only a few percentage points separate the top four contenders, where those voters go could make a huge difference in the final count.

Not everyone who were with Fred will vote for someone else. We will write Fred''s name in on the primary ballots and in November. None of the other candidates can hold a candle to Fred. He had it all, leadership, wisdom, knowledge, understanding of the issues and doable solutions. None of the others are in his league. So...we will make our statement to the RNC that offering flawed candidates who have issue problems and ethic shortcomings are unacceptable.

Huckabee supporters welcome our brothers and sisters in the Thompson campaign. Help us put the only real social coservative in the Whitehouse. He strongly supports the Fair Tax www.fairtax.org and has the endorsement of Jim Gilchrist the founder of the minute men for his 9 point immigration plan. Don''t let the establishment GOP who is scared to death of a real social conservative with real NEW ideas tell you who to elect, send them the message that we vote our convictions! www.mikehuckabee.com

Noticed that there was no mention of Gov Romney in this story, more MSM bias against him??? According to Limbaugh, most of Thompsons voters will lean toward Gov Romney, because he seems to be the most conservative in the Reagan mold. Huckabee will only be a spoiler to help McCain, in hopes of a VP post, however, McCain has already gave that to Graham. Something that the MSM has missed.

Huck''s campaign is broke, people are leaving and he will probably quit after Florida too. Huck has been living on handouts and taxes for too long. McCain''s campaign is broke and running on government money. Giuliani is running on fumes too and wasn''t allowed to drive the pace car. How much money will Romney spend to continue? It seems only Romney and limited government conservative Ron Paul have the big bucks to continue. The rest will have to run on free media. It seems the liberal media will pick our nominee by providing $100s of millions of dollars in exposure. McCain''s campaign finance law ensured that. All the newspapers fell over themselves to endose him. Remember, McCain was finished until he asked for endorsement from Al Gore''s Vice President-Lieberman. Could we get a democrat along with McCain? Ron Paul is great, Romney is probably better than the rest if you can handle "change". If you have to have an evangelical christian, Ron Paul will be your only choice.

I donated $100 yesterday and another $50.00 today to Mike Huckabee. I don''t see how anyone else could prefer any other candidate to Huckabee. He has the plan, the experience (voted one of the top 5 best governors in the US) is a great communicator and debater and a strong core of basic beliefs that help him to make consistent decisions. He also has already proven he can work with a bi-partisan House and Senate by getting re-elected TWICE as governor in a democratic state. Must have been doing something RIGHT. Go HUCK!!! We invite Thompson and Hunter supporter to jump on boad!!!

Today all the other candidates are talking about "change"...Mike was already speaking about "change" months and months ago! This country needs to be rescued from the "brink" and Mike is the only viable candidate out there to do the job! He has vision; he has ideas; he has the background of experience. Most importantly, he truly connects with millions of people. He is not fake, dishonest, or mean-spirited. We need Mike! Our great country needs a great man to lead it-a man called MIKE HUCKABEE!

Mike Huckabee truly understands that one man%u2019s floor is another man%u2019s ceiling. Mike Huckabee is nowhere near the campaign floor that he came from.

Go Huckabee, ALL THE WAY!
