The Greatest Gift
The first birthday party I can remember was when my mom made a Little Red Riding Hood cake. I had a few friends over, ate some cake and lemonade and felt like the most special girl in the world.
Nowadays, birthdays have become big business. Crazy amounts of time and money are spent on both kids and adults. From clowns to bouncy castles and goody bags and magic shows, to renting out restaurants and nightclubs for hundreds of your best friends; it has become birthday mania.
I like it the old-fashioned way. All I ever want for my birthday is time with my good friends. Adam Cohen, who is married to my dear friend Judy, is an accountant by trade, who cooks as a hobby. Somehow we got on this tradition of him making me a birthday cake every year. So he showed up at the studio this morning with a homemade cake! (Thankfully he decided to forgo the 45 candles!)
The effort that he made, and the cake itself, were the best present ever. Later, I will go home to yet another cake made by my three daughters, no doubt with thousands of sprinkles on top and three homemade cards. (OK, so I had to remind them to make the cards.) That's really all I really, truly want. Two of my best friends are even bringing over dinner so I don't have to cook. I cannot imagine anything better.
It's so simple and doesn't cost anything ... just time, effort and love — the gift of friendship is the most precious thing. And the best part is, it's there for all your birthdays to come!
