UN says Haiti's leaders need to work together
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations says Haiti's political leaders need to put aside their differences and work together.
Ambassador Susan Rice commented on behalf of a 15-member delegation representing the U.N. Security Council that wrapped up a four-day visit Thursday to meet with senior Haitian officials and study U.N. operations in the poor Caribbean nation.
Haitian President Michel Martelly has been at odds with lawmakers since he was sworn in last year.
A U.N. peacekeeping force has been in Haiti since 2004 following the ouster of then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The mission's mandate will come up before the Security Council for renewal in October.
