(CBS News) GoDaddy released a statement on its massive outage Monday, which took down millions of website and disrupted email service. The domain registrar and Web hosting service apologized for the outage, but says it was not hacked.

GoDaddy goes down, Anonymous claims responsibility
Most GoDaddy sites back up and running, rep says

Twitter accounts thought to be associated with the hacking group Anonymous claimed responsibility for the attack. Anonymous claimed it took GoDaddy-hosted sites down by using a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack and bots.

Anonymous says the alleged attack was launched because GoDaddy supports censorship. GoDaddy was the target of protests after it was discovered that the company supported unpopular bills the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA).

GoDaddy is disputing the claims, saying that it was an internal issue that caused the outage.

Here is GoDaddy's full statement:

"Yesterday, GoDaddy.com and many of our customers experienced intermittent service outages starting shortly after 10 a.m. PDT. Service was fully restored by 4 p.m. PDT.

The service outage was not caused by external influences. It was not a "hack" and it was not a denial of service attack (DDoS). We have determined the service outage was due to a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables. Once the issues were identified, we took corrective actions to restore services for our customers and GoDaddy.com. We have implemented measures to prevent this from occurring again.

At no time was any customer data at risk or were any of our systems compromised.

Throughout our history, we have provided 99.999% uptime in our DNS infrastructure. This is the level our customers expect from us and the level we expect of ourselves. We have let our customers down and we know it.

We take our business and our customers' businesses very seriously. We apologize to our customers for these events and thank them for their patience."

Look at www.bayouprinting.com, this site is hosted at GoDaddy, it says hacked by anonymous. This isnt some outage or a DDOS attack, the site got hacked. I hate the way people try and cover things up, now I'm stuck explaining to a client what happened

Let's do some math. GoDaddy says they have a 99.999% uptime throughout their history (which includes the last few days, doesn't it?) That means for every 1 hour they are down, they are up 99,999 hours. They were down for 6 hours, so that means that they were up for 599,994 hours. Divide by 24 and you get 24,999.75 days. Divide by 365 and you get 68.49 years. OK, I didn't account for leap years, but obviously Go Daddy has been in business at least 68 years for that statement to be accurate.

Go Daddy is an unscrupulous company and done some unethical things. The most gruesome is the killing of an endangered species elephant by their cowardly CEO. I'd say this "outage" of their network was more "karma" getting back at Go Daddy! Good riddance!

internal issue?

you mean ... there are many other situations where all the complex technology that makes all this stuff work could cause an outage like this?

you mean ... one incorrectly run script ... or one power outage in the wrong place ... or one update gone bad can bring down a whole segment of the network (the godaddy segment) for hours or days?

does this mean that nobody should be shot ... or imprisoned ... or tortured?

does this mean all the alleged 'starving children' ... 'lost homes' ... and 'failed businesses' due to this outage are the fault of godaddy?

Darn it all. Well folks that I have spoken with that use GoDaddy are very pleased. On the other hand I have been using 1AND1 for years and until the last six months with reasonable service and support. However in the last six-months outages have been frequent and lengthy and service and explanations god awful. I have already transferred my personal account away from 1AND1 and over time will transfer all my customer accounts as well.
