Spotify to launch web browser-based version, not lowering prices
Citing multiple sources, TechCrunch reports Spotify plans to port an overhauled version of its software to the Web. Currently, the users of the service have to download software to use the service. Moving the software to the Web could increase the frequency of use and the company's user base.
Spotify is unique because although it is an online music streaming service, like Pandora or Rdio, it requires users to download a desktop client, similar to iTunes, that must be launched in order to listen to music.
A browser-based version will be attractive for people who can't download software due to lack of hard drive space or download restrictions at work. It will also be quicker to share songs on Spotify online. However, bypassing the desktop client will limit some of Spotify's features, like playing music in offline mode or installing apps.
Spotify is not planning to lower its prices, however. TechCrunch's source suggested that the company could reduce the cost of its mobile app subscription. AllThingsD disputed that claim, saying that it would make no sense to reduce its profit margin. And that a price cut was tested in Spain with no significant results.
Spotify is an ad-supported online music-streaming service that allows users to search through a catalog of millions of songs. Paid subscriptions for the service range from about $5 to $10 per month. The service launched in the U.S. in July 2011.
