(CBS News) Rumors of a 4-inch iPhone 5 are resurfacing, as specifications for Apple's mobile operating system iOS 6 has given clues to a scalable screen size.

Running a developer's build of iOS 6, the blog 9to5Mac noticed that Apple's upcoming mobile operating system can be scaled to a taller 640 x 1,136 pixel display. (The iPhone 4S' screen is 640 x 960 pixels.) The observation suggests a taller iPhone display, which aligns with previous rumors of a taller iPhone 5.

Rumors of a September 12 Apple event began circulating last week, when the blog iMore reported that Apple will announce two products on that date. Citing "sources who have proven accurate in the past," iMore reported that Apple may announce an iPhone 5 and iPad mini, with the iPhone 5 expected to go on sale on September 21. There are no details on if or when an iPad mini would be released.

Last week, Sharp president Takashi Okuda said that screens for the iPhone 5 will start shipping in August. Reuters source also said the next iPhone screen may also be going from 3.5 inches to 4 inches - to rival the Samsung Galaxy S III, which has a 4.8-inch display.
