Raspberry Pi hits the market for $35

(CBS News) Raspberry Pi, a credit-card sized Linux computer, made a splash this morning when its launch caused the website to crash.

A $35 version of the computer, Raspberry Pi Fedora Remix, is a tiny circuit board without a case and includes a CPU, USB port, Ethernet port, SD card slot, HDMI port and 256MB of RAM. The computer has a graphic user interface with a web browser and word processor.

The Raspberry Pi Fedora Remix is currently available in the U.K.

Forgive me but it's cool that something that size can perform the most basic operations one might expect from a personal computer but I don't really see the alure.

My phone is about that size and it's far more versitile and has far more functionality.

My tablet is smaller (if you take into account a keyboard, mouse and monitor) and again has for more versatility and functionality than this device. (yes my tablet has an HDMI port, usb ports and an SD card reader Toshiba Thrive).

I guess what I am wondering is "What hole does this fill?".

Sure, you might say they can do that on their home PC but of course not everyone can afford one. It's a very cheap way of allowing everyone to have a computer (of a sort) at home. More versions are planned that will come in actual cases.


by jayteefive March 1, 2012 3:55 PM EST: Your phone and tablet also cost a bit more than $35. (They cost about 10 times more.) So this fills a capable platform with input (keyboard and mouse) and output (hdmi or rca video) for a tiny price. It also runs a well established operating system (Linux) so development of apps is easy. (I've pre-ordered one... I know, I'm a geek...)
