Rupert Murdoch's wife not really on Twitter, verification yanked

(CBS) - Last week, News Corporation chief executive officer Rupert Murdoch and his wife Wendi Deng were on their way to becoming the new Twitter power couple. That is until it was discovered that the @Wendi_Deng account was a fake.

How could such a high profile account be faked and verified for a full day?

No one knows for sure, but the account has since had its verification status taken away.

It seemed like a legitimate account because of her constant tweeting with Murdoch. According to the Guardian, News International added to the mix up by confirming the account was real.

"The @Wendi_Deng twitter account is NOT genuine. The News Intl s/person who told me it was last night has just called to say she was wrong," BBC political correspondent Ross Hawkins tweeted to clarify the mix-up.

The tweets were pretty close to what we'd imagine a wife would say to her husband. The tweets weren't overtly humorous and some were even mundane.

"You might ask "why didn't I tell them?" But surely Twitter should be checking out its Verified status more carefully? No?," @Wendi_Deng tweeted.

"We don't comment on our verification process but can confirm that the @wendi_deng account was mistakenly verified for a short period of time. We apologize for the confusion this caused," a Twitter spokesperson told Talking Points Memo Tuesday.

It was fun while it lasted, fake Wendi Deng.
