Occupy Wall Street uses social media to spread nationwide

(CBS) - Social media has been an important tool for protesters overseas. Now that the Occupy Wall Street protests have reached a tipping point, the abundance of online organizing is staggering.

On July 13, 2011, the magazine Adbusters posted a call to occupy Wall Street on their blog.

"On September 17, we want to see 20,000 people flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months. Once there, we shall incessantly repeat one simple demand in a plurality of voices," the post said.

When CNN reported that "hundreds" of people showed up, it seemed like a success for the cause. Everyone could return to business as usual, right?

Not so fast. The camps in downtown Manhattan have only gotten larger and the protests have spread to other cities across the U.S.

Once we took a closer look at the movement and how it was being organized, we were impressed. The protesters used all forms of social media keep the movement alive. 

Facebook pages have popped up for major cities across the country. Twitter hashtags have been established for communication at general assemblies. Countless videos have been posted to YouTube, Vimeo and Livestream. We found some moving personal accounts of job loss and helplessness shared on the blog, "We are the 99 percent."

It's remarkable to see Middle East's protest tactics being used in a free speech society. For a movement that claims no leader, it is highly organized, making off-shoots easy to start.

Occupy Wall Street even got an Internet meme.

The Occupy Sesame Street meme puts the central characters of the children's show in the shoes of regular Americans, with one Twitter user tweeting, "Truly outrageous that 99% of the cookies are consumed by 1% of the monsters on PBS. #occupysesamestreet."

You have to love technology!

Meetup groups have formed in 872 cities across the U.S., using the Occupy Together website as a central hub. We look forward to seeing the status updates, tweets, Instagrams...you get it.

As America watches this street protesting, it has been made clear, in the start there was a directive, but now people are asking, "Something has become lost, and no one seems to know where this is going and and how long will this be allowed to stand ".
As stated before at other web sites, I did not come here to tell you how this will end, I came here to tell how it has begun.
Make no error in this, the street protesters are in harms way. And we offer a compromise, suitable to help end this peace-fully. Understand this, " This will end one way or another, how it ends will be up to you.

So for those who do have a life and are asking them self the same thing, When will this come to a end.
To prevent this from becoming a street battle we are asking all Government Officials and Protesters to agree to a 30 to 60 day draw down of the numbers of the people on the streets. There are some among you that are nothing but street and even though they say they can not even find a job, I say you lack the motivation to find a job.
I myself stepped into hard times, and all I could find was a $7.25 to $7.75 job but I seek to evolve to better myself to regain that little empire I once had and I will have that of which is mine. So for some of you in this mix of people in and for the Occupy America, You Lie....

If Eric Cantor and his cronies think that the "Wall Street Protest" is nothing but a MOB and messy gatherings, he is living in the foolish world. He should thank his God that these hundreds and thousands of people who have joined this protest around the Nation are still behaving civilized way, have not damaged to any property or have done any harm to anyone, and did not go to teach lesson to the individual politician but if Cantor and his groups will come out openly against them and give them wrong label, some of them will surely behaved differently taking march and protests and hunger strikes to their homes and offices and demand time bound programs to restore America 's reputation, prestige and economical stability by cutting trillion dollar tax loot to the millionaires by Bush, stopping wars at once and closing all loop holes to the large corporations, banks and wall street goons. Cair &Cantor has not to wait too long, when the protesters will start demonstrating on his home and office very soon.If less fortunate Arabs can revolt against their dictators and kings, why American cannot raise their voice to their politicians who have sold their souls to the millionaires and billionaires.

Occupy Wall Street has now gotten the attention of the people who control this country. Accordingly they are rolling out the Ministry of Truth to try and interpret what it is all about. Immediately the discourse turns to trivial two-party partisanship matters. The remarks are just ridiculous and sickening, including that this is a movement to reinvigorate Presidente Hopium, what nonsense. Herman Cain had the audacity to twist this into a criticism of people who don't work, and who seek handouts. No Herman, you have it ass backward, this Movement is about your cronies free riding at the trough and seeking handouts.


What "they" just don't get is that Occupy Wall Street is primarily a pro-democracy, anti-kleptocrat and anti-bankster Movement. Occupy Wall Street is not anti-wealth, it is not about class warfare, it is and I repeat, anti-kleptocratic. . Occupy Wall Street is pro-American in the traditional sense. It is about removing the anti-democratic influence of money from politics. Kleptocracies using government and the corrupt two party system are dangerously anti-American. The Movement can't let them take the high ground. The high ground belongs to the Movement.

The corrupt media uses all this protest to pull out their standard dividers. The Movement will naturally attract true conservatives and true progressives, and true moderates. The machine arrives on the scene with false "conservatives", and the false "progressives" pushing their corrupt status quo anti-democracy agendas. I am proud that the Movement sees through this. Stay the course. That is the Movement's strength and gives us the ability to not only see through the lies and misrepresentation, but to actually turn it against the corruptos.

The root reason for the, "Occupy er's" and the "99% er's". Gaze upon it if you dare. Maybe this will help make the danger of fiat money clear. Imagine you and me are setting across from each other. We create enough money to represent all of the world's wealth. Each one of us has one SUPER Dollar in front of him. You own half of everything and so do I. I'm the government though. I get bribed into creating a Central Bank. You're not doing what I want you to be doing so I print up myself eight more SUPER Dollars to manipulate you with. All of a sudden your SUPER Dollar only represents one tenth of the wealth of the world! That isn't the only thing though. You need to get busy and get to work because YOU'VE BEEN STIFFED with the bill for the money I PRINTED UP to get YOU TO DO what I WANTED. That to me represents what has been happening to the economy, and us, and why so many of our occupations just can't keep up with the fake money presses.
