The scene outside Apple headquarters Friday morning as the media trickled in for the press conference.

Apple is hosting a much-anticipated press conference at its corporate headquarters Friday morning to discuss reception issues. that have nagged the iPhone 4 since its debut in June. Our sister site CNET will be live blogging from the event, which starts at 10 a.m. PDT.

On Monday, Consumer Reports said that its testing had confirmed user complaints that holding the iPhone 4 over a particular spot drastically reduces the signal strength the unit receives. It reported that covering the spot with duct tape or a case alleviates the problem. As per previous practice, Apple had no comment and it continues to play this one close to the vest.

And so the inevitable guessing game in advance of the event has painted scenarios that are all over the map. Some analysts speculate that Apple might order a full product recall, a move which could cost the company as much as $1.5 billion. However, others said to be familiar with Apple's thinking in the matter cast doubt on that narrative, saying management likely will announce more modest measures. In late June Apple acknowledged reception issues affecting the smartphone in a note to users on its Web site. On Thursday, Apple released a software update for the iPhone 4, as well as the previous two iPhone models, that changes how reception is shown to the end user.

Dropped calls? Don't they have an App for that??? Steve Jobs is dyslectic, he said he loves his users, but he meant he uses his lovers.

Great Apple Designers & Engineers at work..."We've created a SMART Phone that will work ONLY if you hold it a angled 45 degrees facing the North Pole or Mecca if your a muslim" on the summer solstice at sunrise.. you must be a Civil Engineer or have a relative familiar with the Orion Constellation..
...but first download a GPS app...you will need tobend over with duct tape on phone... facing south towards any Turnip Truck in Alabama!

Apple has added a software upgrade that will change how the reception is shown? Great... No reception or poor reception but your phone will "show" great reception. No thanks Apple. Your products are still inferior but yuppies love to show them off.

Pre-order and got the phone on the launch day. I am able to replicate the signal issue by suffocating the partition really hard... but no impact on my regular calls. Its much faster than 3gs and resolution is FAR better than any smartphone currently in the market..

I really don't like to put the phone in a case, it prevents it from being easily set into devices that are designed to cradle it. It's nice that they are giving away a bumper (which amounts to a rubber-band), but it doesn't really fix the design flaw and it is a design flaw! Why won't they just come out and say that... Swallow your pride and speak the truth! It is a design flaw! It it was an automobile there would be a recall. Fix it and move on to 4.1.

"And when we fall short, we try harder. We pick ourselves up, and we figure out what's wrong, and we try harder."

Try harder on all those Mac issues that turn up on Apple tech support sites and never get fixed, or even explained. If you've got $10^12 and a decade. I'm a 20 year Apple user; I know what I'm talking about, and so do you.

Look, iPhone owners could care LESS if they get reception or not. They just want to be seen talking into a iPhone to look "cool."

Here's a suggestion for another product line for you Apple: why not offer a "mockup" version of the iPhone with just the case and no inner working parts. Heck, people would STILL buy them at a price of 89.99 (or more) as you long as the mockup has "The Logo" on it :-) !

Or add a plug on it so people can hook up a set of rabbit ears ?

You can then put tin foil on the rabbit ears for an even better signal !
