Man accidently shoots self, wife at gun safety class

(AP) ROANOKE, Va. - A Roanoke man and his wife were recovering after he accidentally shot himself and her during a firearms safety class.

The Bedford County Sheriff's Office tells media outlets that Michael L. Deel shot himself in the hand with a .45-caliber handgun. The bullet also struck his wife, Michelle, in the leg as she was sitting beside him.

The incident occurred Saturday during a firearms safety class at a residence. The instructor, Thomas Starke, told police he'd left the room and then heard a shot.

The Deels were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Michael Deel says the shooting was a "stupid accident."

Accident? This was a negligent discharge. There is no such thing as an accidental shooting.

Guns don't shoot themselves. Don't point a gun at anything you don't want to destroy. Keep your finger away from the trigger.

Guns are extremely safe. Stupid people are a hazard.

Wisconsin recently enacted a concealed carry law. Wisconsin also leads the nation in binge drinking. This should get interesting....

Too bad for you that CCW holders are among the least likely to run afoul with the law. Less than the general populace.
That won't stop you from dancing in the blood of any victims though.

More fodder. Truth is, if you cut your leg using a power saw do you outlaw power saws?
If you run into a telephone pole while driving, do you outlaw cars (or telephone poles)?
I'm certain this was a teachable moment and, fortunately, they will have second chance to decide if this is what they really want.
the old saying is, shoot me once, shame on me, shoot me twice, ahh crap.

I think anyone that shoots himself and somebody else, shouldn't be allowed to own a gun.

It often is the case, that once someones shoots themselves they seldom have a need for a firearm. Also, in most instances, shooting someone else disqualifies one from possessing a weapon. Dick Cheney is permitted ownership after accidentally shooting another and that seems right. The distinction, however, is he didn't shoot himself first.

I agree this was a stupid accident, but what does showing a table full of hand guns have to do with the story? Would your show a picture of a lot full of cars when reporting a traffic accident?

Probably because they weren't at the scene. They just report the news without being at the scene.

The NRA must be proud of the new members that are arming themselves in the good old USA.

vernique3, what does the NRA have to do with this?
Do you also blame AAA & Chevy for automobile accidents? I mean, you DO want to be consistent, don't you?

Seems there are a lot of stupid accidents.

This one, like many others, wouldn't have happened if there were no guns.

Ras!! You can't uninvent guns. I and many people like me know how and have the machinery to make most Guns that have ever been made and a lot that haven't yet. Please quit trying to get rid of that which cannot be gotten rid of and lets work on the stupidity part.. (Thats the part where people use Guns to hurt or kill each other)

If I pick up a rock and hit you in the head with it, I will kill you because 'rocks can do that to you'... (and I am strong enough)..
Guns are the same way...

Right, like stabbings wouldn't occur if we didn't have sharp objects, or car accidents wouldn't occur if we didn't have cars - oh here's a good one - to cut the number of deaths due to air travel, we should just stop using planes.

People like you are true idiots, and the epitome of whats wrong with this country. You want gun safety - give everyone a gun, and mandate gun training in schools - that would fix the problem too, but I would assume that doesn't go with your agenda - because fixing the problem isn't what you're after - its eliminating MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS to own a firearm.
