AP Exclusive: Inside Romania's secret CIA prison

WASHINGTON — New details have emerged about the CIA's secret prison in Romania. It's a facility that housed notorious terrorism suspects but which the Romanian government has repeatedly denied ever existed.

A joint investigation by The Associated Press and German public television ARD has identified the location of the prison, hidden in a busy neighborhood just minutes from downtown Bucharest.

The Romanian government stores classified information there. But former U.S. intelligence officials say that from 2003 to 2006, the basement contained six prefabricated prison cells. Harsh interrogations, but not waterboarding, were conducted there. Prisoners were moved there by van, entering the facility through a back gate, out of view from nearby neighbors.

It's long been known that Romania hosted a CIA prison, but the location has not previously been revealed.
